Susan, I'm so sorry to hear about your sister. The stove comes way down on a list that includes getting to see her. I hope you don't have to wait too long to make that trip.

This is a time to get things in order so that I CAN go and, if it is needful, stay.... she is not yet ready for that visit. So it's on me to use the time well, here, to be ready to go without any encumbrances from home to distract me from being totally there with her and for her.

While I am waiting for the time to go, I'm focusing on what is right in front of me to do, which will involve wrapping up a lot of home and work stuff so it can be on hold for a period of time. And I will continue to track that here.

"All things work together for good for they that love the Lord," so I am confident it will all come together. (There is no conflict of priorities, because they all dovetail.)

~Susan

This morning I discovered I'd accidentally mashed a Mediterranean house gecko (introduced in the area, they're cute as can be) in the security door on my back porch when I was preparing to walk the dogs. It wouldn't shut completely on this very cool morning (high 40s!) I realized I scrunched a chilly lizard unable to move out of harm's way. After rescue I warmed him in my hand but I could see it was crippled, losing it's back leg movement, so I squashed it to put it out of it's misery.

Lizard triage slowed me enough that Susie and Zeke arrived before I got out of the yard. The dogs played out back and since she wanted to know how I streamed NetFlix I showed her and set up My Man Godfrey - she'd never seen it. We ended up having tea and blueberry muffins and watching a movie - nice start to the weekend!

I've done some virtual organizing today - my friend who is losing his house called and said he thought it was time to rescue his email out of his current Internet provider's system. He uses their web interface and if his account closes, his email will go away. I talked him through downloading and setting up Thunderbird (Mozilla's resident email program) and then setting his email accounts to download into Thunderbird. He has an active online life moderating some discussion groups and to lose all of that if the account goes away then he'd lose a lot of contacts.

Now to see if I can clear up my actual clutter around here!

I did a little shopping this evening after dumping a bunch of recycling in the village collection bin. Stopped on my way home to pick up a gyro and it warmed my heart to see a few guys sitting with their beers in paper bags having a friendly conversation at the picnic table the owners of the gas station/restaurant put beside the parking area. It has been so hot all summer than no one used it; one wondered if it was simply not a good meeting place, or always the heat. In our modern rushed technology world, you sometimes need to see guys sitting around shooting the breeze to feel the human connection still works.

When I was shopping I found a discounted package of beef short ribs. I've been wanting an excuse to do a pot of beef and veggies, so this is it. Tomorrow I'll braise the ribs and then add in carrots and potatoes. I can tell it is getting cooler because I want to start doing some real cooking again.

Altho I AM working on some upstairs reorganization, our cooktop just bit the dust; planning for the installation of the new one will take whatever time I can spare. Because the higher priority is wrapping up work stuff so I can get to Chicago, hopefully around Nov. 1, to spend some time with my sister-- who is terminally ill and who may need some care beyond just a brief visit. And then I may find myself organizing there, as there has been some consideration of her doing treatment and/or hospice in California, in which case she will need quite a lot of help closing her apartment in Chicago.

For me September was a false start. It was hot and uncomfortable like the rest of the summer, difficult to get much done. But it is inevitable that we will eventually cool down (it was officially 101 yesterday here).

Time to use the higher energy well, time to start thinking about the holidays. Cooking, planning indoor activities like crafts we let slide during the summer. And finding a place to set up and do those crafts comfortably.

Looking forward to what people have to report. And as we get into fall, I hope maeve makes a stop in to report on how this year is looking compared to last. Is the yurt finished and was there a garden and a crop? Andrea is watching the builders slowly enclose space behind the old part of her house - will they have it far enough along that they can finish before the heavy winter weather sets in? I'm sure Michelle is working on building something around her place - how is it coming along? Maryanne, Alice, some of you must be hunkering down for cold by now. The first report of snow always seems way too early, but I suppose that is due if it hasn't already happened. I hope to have a warmer house this winter - I completely boxed in (with insulation board) my fireplace and have covered over the opening. A television sits on the hearth in front of it. No more cool wind slowly drifting into the room.

It feels so good out there this evening that I'll start the thread a day early, to give everyone a run at the month of October!

Here is the previous thread.
