You can hear her: Ellie Skinner I think she is at Towersey festival this year but I will check. Karen |
Subject: RE: Review: Purest female voice From: van lingle Date: 25 Jul 06 - 04:46 PM Mary Fahl, who sang with October Project has an awesome voice. Listen to her "Going Home" that was the theme song for the movie Gods and Generals. Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh with Danu is my favorite Irish singer. I don't know how "pure" her voice is though, she uses lots of ornaments to great effect.vl |
Subject: RE: Review: Purest female voice From: Cruiser Date: 25 Jul 06 - 12:14 PM Shelby Flint She wrote and recorded "Angel on My Shoulder" that debuted on 2/06/61 and charted at #22. Her recording of the traditional folk "The Riddle Song" ("I gave My Love a Cherry") on a Collectors' Choice Music CD demonstrates the purest female voice I have ever heard. PS: Johnny Mathis borrowed the melody of "The Riddle Song" for his #9 hit "The Twelfth Of Never" in 1957. Cruiser |
Subject: RE: Review: Purest female voice From: Scoville Date: 25 Jul 06 - 10:55 AM Anita Carter!! Young Joan Baez, Judy Collins, or Joni Mitchell. Not as "pure", but Kate Wolf is still my all-over favorite. |

Subject: RE: Review: Purest female voice From: Scrump Date: 25 Jul 06 - 04:28 AM IMO Chris While has the finest voice of any female singer. Not that I think this thread has any real merit - just thought I'd put in a word for her as no-one else seems to have mentioned her. |

Subject: RE: Review: Purest female voice From: Peter T. Date: 13 Sep 03 - 03:03 PM Purity of voice is not everything one is looking for -- I revere Ella Fitzgerald, but when you are down and out, only Billie Holiday can do it, and she had nothing like a pure voice. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Review: Purest female voice From: postman Date: 13 Sep 03 - 02:27 PM Alison Krauss and Sissel are a head above the rest for me as far as a "pure voice" is concerned. Alison is also a great fiddler. Kate Wolf is one of my favorites - and as an overall singer and composer, she's in class by herself. |

Subject: RE: Review: Purest female voice From: GUEST,Martha Date: 14 Aug 03 - 12:42 PM Dear Strollin' Johnny, The name Sinead Stone may well be obscure to you and indeed others, as are many of the suggestions in this thread, of that I've no doubt, however to a huge number of people here in Ireland the name is not so obscure. Having heard her album played time and time again by many of the big names on Irish radio over the past year or so, having seen a television documentary on the making of her album, and with Late Late show appearences among others, no I don't think she's all that obscure. I simply put her name forward as I believe her to be a wonderful singer as do others in this thread before me. Can't see why you should get so up-tight. If you don't like the thread, simply go to another. |

Subject: RE: Review: Purest female voice From: GUEST,Strollin' Johnny Date: 14 Aug 03 - 08:26 AM Wot a waste of time these kind of threads are! There's no such thing as 'best' or 'purest' or any other kind of 'est'. Just provokes people to try to be smart-arses and outdo everyone else by dropping increasingly obscure names into the ring. 'Who's your favourite this-or-that, and why?' would produce a much more meaningful response. Johnny |
Subject: RE: Review: Purest female voice From: GUEST,Martha Date: 14 Aug 03 - 07:56 AM Dear John from Hull, I like your posting of Aug 9. Yes Cara Dillon is very good but a little too sweet and light-weight. Have you heard of Dublin's Sinead Stone, now in my humble opinon she has a truly superb voice and can really deliver a lyric. When you think of some of the successful singers around, it's amazing she is not signed to a major label. Her album is really worth getting - "Legacy Of A Quiet Man". Her website is www.stoneandfarrelly.com PS. Along with musican Gerard Farrelly, Probably the best version one will here of "The Isle Of Innisfree" and there's another beautiful song called "Annaghdown". Slan. |
Subject: RE: Review: Purest female voice From: GUEST,eliza c Date: 13 Aug 03 - 04:30 PM Oops. What I meant to say was Julie Murphy, and Billie Holliday. And Linda Ronstadt, she had a great voice. And me Ma, obviously. Almeida Riddle! And Elizabeth Cotten. And Mahalia Jackson. And Beth Gibbons and Tracy Thorn from Everything But the Girl. I always loved Sheila Stewart's voice, she has amazing gravity and gravitas. Can't think of anyone else. Or can, but too many. cheers, e c (ps thanks john...;) ) |

Subject: RE: Review: Purest female voice From: GUEST,Michael Date: 11 Dec 02 - 12:09 PM Having read some of the recent postings, I went to the Sinead Stone website, I asked my sister back home in the old sod, if she had heard of her album. She saw her sing a track from it on The Late Late Show a few months ago and has heard it a few times on radio. Anyway, she sent me over a copy and basically I love it, it's a very beautifully recorded album with a great version of that classic song "The Isle Of Innisfree". The songwriters son is on piano and did the arrangments. But for this great site which I look in on now and again, I would not have come across the CD or indeed others in the past. Michael |
