I think the Inuit Cultural Performers are from Canada, some even as close as Ottawa, so I don't see that there would have been insurmountable obstacles in getting them here.

Linda et al-

Friday and Saturday there is a scheduled late night/early morning shanty/forebitter session (following the evening concert), usually at a dance hall across the street from the Museum grounds. There is a bar in the front end of the dance hall. All Festival attendees and performers are invited to attend and many do.

It's a challenging situation for even a seasoned performer to lead a song there, given the size of the crowd and the hall, and the order is survival of the fittest. Some crash and burn but I've also seen the crowd quiet right down to listen to someone new who may not have a shantyman's roar. Most songs are done without instruments, but instruments are not prohibited. I've never seen anything amplified.

I've observed some grouping in different parts of the hall so that a lead singer might be better supported by friends familiar with the song but other times things get quite dynamic as people dash here and there to join in or even dance!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

our Sins will find us out! The South Portland den of ubiquitous drinking and revelry in the guise of a Song Circle, beware of the session that starts at lunchtime and lasts until the last has fallen and had a duvet thrown over them. Sins parties are special, well, I don't think the show was put on for our benefit, judging by who's in the cupboard seems to be a regular thing!

Hotay! I think what we do is fly in to Providence. From there I put on the Rollerblades and push the wheelchair right in to Mystic. Yep, a couple of flasks and an airhorn and we should be fine.

Linda Kelly -
All that & more. Susan's suggestion to wear a Mudcat (or DigTrad) T-shirt is a good one. I found it a great kick to espy & chat with 'Catters all over the place.

It is true that the second weekend sort of splits Saturday and Sunday, or something like that. I haven't check the calendar. The 13, 14, and 15th of June are the relevant dates for all concerned.

My CD's are shrink-wrapped and ready to ship. Other performers might best contact Events Network and make sure they've got everything in order.

I'm certainly looking forward to another extended weekend of good song and companionship.

The following weekend we'll be hosting Bob Zentz up in Maine at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath on Sunday, 7:30 pm. Consider running up to Maine for Zentz and the "Two Lobster Special" at Cook's Lobster House on Bailey's Island.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Fantastic list of performers -can you give me some idea of format-is it concerts and workshops or is there an opportunity for singarounds as in most English Festivals (but probably with less alcohol!)

It looks like I will be able to attend this year after all. I was under the impression that the festival was taking place the previous weekend as in past years which would have conflicted with the Jewish holiday of Shavuos. I will definitely be there on Sunday the 15th.

I'm not performing Abby but I'll sing for you anytime. I'm begining to think they won't book me cause of the crowd I run with.
Ya know the song where the verse starts out

"When I was a young lass (lad) me mother used to say
I was such a foolish lad & easily led astray
Before I would work I'd rather sing & play
By the water's side on the banks by the whaler"

Not quite like that, not a bad change, eh? But you get the drift.

I don't know about the paths, it's been a couple of yrs for me too Abby, but I'm sure with money being as tight as it is, everywhere, that you'll find the road's are still a bit rocky, forget the wheelchair bring a windsurfer.
Anyway, it'll be great to see you & Tinker again, it has been a while.
Just to let you know if you bring a flask you won't notice the bumps as much
But you probably knew that, didn't you?
I'm so happy to hear that you'll be making the drive (or are you flying) from North Carolina. I'm getting excited too.
See you there.
Barry

And much so Finest Kind.

Yep, yep, we got talked into getting up there again. Been 6 years.

Tremendously excited.

Are the paths paved yet? I'm trying to decide whether to bring my Rollerblades.

I don't believe that the cancellation of the Inuit cultural performers was due to money. It was more to do with the logistics of coming and going in the USA and the problems related to "forign acts" entering the country for the purposes of work. Long standing sophisticated acts have learned from experience and from their agents how to deal with all the red tape. Lessor known and in particular"genuine" cultural acts have a much more difficult time with it all.

There might be some debate over "more genuine acts and fewer revivalist bands" with regard to who is "genuine" and who is not. A time machine would be nice to have access to, but they are even more dear than fourth generation traditional style singers.

The word is that due to financial issues left over from previous year, there is once again a strapped budget, we need more genuine acts and fewer revivalist bands, but it's a long, hard paddle

Cheers Charley, we have problems slipping our moorings, not wishing to cut the anchor ropes, our owners don't like letting us out to play on our own however if we are going to "work" then it will be different. So offers welcome. Need to talk with Joy B as well, Oh all you lovely people, we miss you all. I will use e-mail regards 2009, cheers

We'll see what we can do for 2009. I might even have a spare CD for show and tell.

April would be a little early for hanging out at the cabin in Maine; you might find the snow drifts distracting. May or June would be fine.

Hi Celtaddict:

Tim Reilly and Everett Brown formed Barnacle in 2006. You know Tim, of course. Everett was in Wickford Express and then Compass Rose. I was with Compass Rose for a few numbers at the 2004 festival and was part of New England Yuletide. Can't wait for you to also meet Jon Cannon, as well.

Can't wait to see and hear everyone.

You are all going to love Trouz Bras! They are amazing. Be ready for a true Fest Noz (night festival; dance until daylight). AND you will get a chance to see them again as they will be back for Celts & Currachs in New London.

Sorry about that last blank post...What a great suprise to have the festival posting on line this morning on the Seaport site...on Pam and my birthday(we share one). It was the best present we could get. I love the familiarity of old friends on the list: Cliff, Don, Jeff, Robbie, the Jonhson Girls, Bob Webb..but it is also enticing to see new names for us; Barnacle, Trouz Bras, and Calico Jack...what a delectale menu of maritime fare! And so the countdown begins...MUCH LOVE, the twins

Do any of you people who don't usually come to Mystic need mudcat tee shirts so we can find you? Dick and I have them in the US and Bill Sables has them in the UK. Order them soon since Dick and I will be in Alaska for most of May. Another possibility is to reserve a shirt and have us bring it.

We were just waiting for you to "bellow Up" Jon.

Does anyone know if the performers list is out yet. From the little I know it sounds like it'll be a grand time but then it always is. Does anyone know what the symposium is gonna focus on. Seeing as I wasn't asked to volunteer this year (it wasn't me, I wasn't even there last year, I swear) I'll get to hear what ever I choose & that's gonna be the 1st time in over a decade, & that's great. I haven't been able to catch the whole symposium in, in I can't remember how long. Jon & Rika your's a few yrs ago was the last one I caught & one of the best too.
I have to thanks my guardian angel for hosting a floor spot for me, Jon & Rika, without that I know I wouldn't have been able to afford it this year. You know who you are angel, just wanted to say thanks again.
After missing last year due to a nephew getting married out in San Francisco (ya Mario, those relatives that don't know or care about Mystic should be disowned) I'm pretty phyc'd about this one.
Have aother wedding in San Francisco this August, my niece is getting married, thank God for the woman, they're far more intellegant.

Speaking of the West Coast, any West Coasters besides Jon & Rika coming over for this?

Barry

I was just speaking to a representative of the vendor who's in charge of CD sales. He said they are in the process of modifying their check-in procedures to better accommodate performers. It sounded to me as if it would be a great improvement over how CD sales were run for the past two years.

The details are still being refined but I think most performers will be pleased.
