I've never heard of this saying until yesterday. The closest thing I can think of in Australia (i shouldn't speak on behalf of the country like that, I know) is if your family dog dies, the parents will tell the kids that they 'took it to the farm' - so the kids aren't too sad.

A historian/writer compatriot - in the past has stated that the term (in a current B.S. thread) Bought The Farm is a reference to airplane pilots of World War ONE - (and subsequent barn-stormers) and crash landings.
