Subject: RE: BS: Ice Hockey 2008-09
From: wysiwyg

I've been thinking this for some time, and wanting to say it.

First, I like Crosby. And I like it when we win.

BUT

I do not like a team being holding itself hostage financially by not making him play with who EVER they give him as a line-mate. If he is really as great as they all say he is, it should be ON HIM to make his line-mates look good.

I do not like a man of Crosby's age as Captain. Gonchar ought to be our Captain and they should name him, retroactively, now.

I do not like the awed stories of how much time Crosby spends on the ice alone "honing his skills," because I do not like to see him hot-dog those skills in a game instead of playing with his line-mates. (He looks a little too much, to me, like the kind of guitar nerd who NEVER plays with OTHERS and spends all his time alone in a room with his precious guitar.)

ANY new linemate has immediately done well with Sid because HE is making the adjustments, but then when he expects them to adjust in return, they are only mortal and it doesn't continue to go well. Stop buying pals, stop the enabling!

===

OUR GM

I do not like the job Ray Shero is doing as GM. Failing to keep guys we now have to scramble to replace, firing a coach to replace him with a clone of the same coach-- not liking this job he's doing.

===

NEW COACH

I LIKE our new coach (BTW he's a lookalike "lost-fraternal-twin" for our features broadcaster, who I think is a sportscaster-wannabe), but he's not doing a THING Therrien wasn't already doing and the Pens, obediently playing well for him, are not doing anything differently than they did with (and for) Therrien last year.

===

I LIKE it when we win but there is something really neat about this team that is not neat anymore. I think they did all this insanity to justify the bucks for the new Arena, and whenever I smell a rat it's no longer just plain fun.

~Susan

Yeah, maybe, if you can do it LIVE. What I need is the replay-later feature NHL Radio accidentally left open, so I can use Total Recorder to catch a car-MP3. The Pens site used to have a link to that--"Hear the most recent game." Gone.

Susan,
I listen to all Red Wing games off the R/Wing home page. They have a radio connection.

Maybe the Pens have one as well.

The Pens are off the schneid and fun, again, to watch. Can they make a Cup run out of it? We'll see. It'll help immensely to get Gonchar off IR.

Our ECHL team is firmly ON the schneid. Last night's game-- they played like a bunch of inflatable women dancing with their prom dates.

And there's no more NHL radio as far as I can tell, only expensive TV crap on the puder. The money-grab for fans' dollars is back on, even in these economic times. And I hear ESPN is taking back the US TV coverage as soon as the Versus contract expires-- it BETTER be affordable.

Hi Jack!

I think that overall, the salary cap has done a good job of helping the league balance out the teams, but it sure has squeezed individual hockey careers into shorter timeframes and made demotions as players age pretty ugly. I think the players' assn will address that-- hope so.

BTW our local FSN is running old, classic Pens games today. Maybe other local FSNs are, too.

Also, on media-- heard ESPN is taking back hockey coverage next year.

The Senator are in last place in their division this year. I don't have much hope for them all their good defensemen are gone. The Salary Cap has damaged them even more than the Penguins.

The Hurricanes are better. But this looks like San Jose's year. Joe Thornton deserves a shot at the Cup.

Let's keep this thread going right up to the trading deadline before the playoffs, and then switch over to a new playoffs thread. Somebuddy pls PM JtS to let hiom know, OK, he's not here all the time.

Time to set up the "group" of threads with a list of links at the top, too, now that there are more than an annual thread but sub-topics have started forming. Somebuddy wanna PM that list to Joe Offer for me please?

Watch a pretty neat goal by next years projected first draft pick, John Tavares, in a world juniors pre-tournament game against Slovakia. It comes at around the 1:15 mark of the clip.

Effing Pens finally WON one, cannot believe. Saw a puck go in the net, it was so startling!!!! God bless DVRs.

Best online hockey bud reminds me, some folks skip the first month or two of the season, because it's really oe long training camp till December. That's what our ECHL team is for-- they're good TILL December when the AHL starts to call up our good ones to replace the ones the NHL called up from them.

Thanks and good luck with your Penguins.

Beer, most of the old NHL Radio links go to the online video package they're promoting nowadays, but see if you can figure out what all this page is about:

http://www.nhl.tv/team/console.jsp?catid=617

Gotta go to bed-- hope you can figger it out and tell US. The other alternative would be to go to your team's website and find their live radio link, if they have one. (Or see team press releases about their radio plan.)

Well, I had to refresh this thing before it fell through the ice and was lost for good. There seems to be very little feedback in here lately, but, it is early in the season; however, we will keep refreshing as needed just to keep it alive and running.

As for my guys, well, they're doing fine on the road and Hossa got a game-winner in OT the other night to give them their first victory of the year at "The Joe." As stated earlier - it's early, so I'm not concerned about anything yet. GO RED WINGS GO!...........mwh

Q & A from Health Canada

Q: The Stanley Cup was recently on tour in my town, and I kissed it. Do I have to worry about being infected by listeria?

A: You are safe. The Stanley Cup has not been in contact with any Maple Leaf product in over 40 years.

Hey, Beer, yes, it was a good game and it was nice to see a couple of "Original Six" teams take a whack at each other. Of course, I'm not a part of the coaching staff and I trust them fully; but, I don't think I'd break up a line with Datsyuk and Zetterberg on it - but again, I'm not a coach. But, it was only the first game, and the only game that is absolutely necessary is "Game 7" of the Stanley Cup Finals. GO RED WINGS - GO!............mwh

At least the DVR/TV Guide search function is now showing hockey bio's, if not games quite yet-- it's so embarrassing to lok it up every day to see if the game coverage is on the schedule yet so I can push that "record" button. But we missed the whole hockey world between Tony Esposito and Sid the Kid. So the bio's are actually very interesting.

But alas, for now I must content myself with mining the music channels for workout music (line into MP3 recorder from headphone jack, then clip tracks with Total Recorder.) Say, that Americana stuff ain't half bad if you don't listen to all one artist at a time! :~)

Looking forward to Sweden,

~Susan

Well, I just had to refresh this thing before it got lost. I'm still struggling with my very mediocre Fighting Irish football team to get too much in to hockey yet; but, that said, I do read the Free Press on-line to keep up with the Red Wings happenings - which are very few these days; and, The Hockey News on-line to see if Shanahan makes it back to the Rangers, goes to some other team, or retires.

The Red Wings are certainly picked by most pundits to repeat as the Stanley Cup Champs especially with the acquisition of Marion Hossa; but hey, it's a long season and anything can happen. Now, please know that I stand side-by-side here with Beer, and Big Mick can't be too far away either, so - GO RED WINGS!!!

Cheers,...................mwh

As for my team, I'm so proud of the last 41 fruitless years that I wear a Canadiens jacket. They have embarrassed us all, the whole Hahira delegation!
