The orbit is a MARS orbit intercept orbit (it is heliocentric). I think even The Saviour (or one of them, anyway) made a remark, when served a grand repast, that the poor we'll always have with us.

I just feel the expense is wicked when people are in dire need here on Earth.
To boldly go is a luxury I don't believe we can afford. Neither should the producers of Star Trek boldly split infinitives :)

Forgive my utter ignorance of astronomy, but is there any planet within striking distance where humans could live? I thought none has enough oxygen, the correct temperature, sufficient water etc.

For the same reason that people have always explored the unknown. To quote a well known TV series...

to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.

Makes even more sense when you look at what we are doing to this planet!

Elon Musk is my man, he not only got the damn rocket built, but he had fun doing it. And he's not averse to a good advertisement, putting a Spaceman in a sportscar and getting good shots of it departing Earth. And a view of the dashboard message panel reading "Don't Panic!" (God bless Douglas Adams).

I watched this on my laptop live and found the experience not just exciting, but charming, to boot.

You just gotta know this guy has read "The Man Who Sold The Moon" by Heinlein.

Let's get the romance back into the cosmos.
