and B, Y & M are none too clever either.

My mother contemplated this years ago - she married a second time which was a big mistake and while the courts argued if an anullment or divorce was appropriate she found you can have any alias you wish as long as you do not defraud anyone by so doing. Once you use an alias for social security purposes the fraud rule is in play, and how do you get a new NI number except by opting to go through official channels?

Anyway Ms Lemon, you have already changed from Mrs Lemon, is this an annual event or a changeable feast? Melon is an anagram of lemon, and they are juicy too!

Re- Deolali,

The big problem with Deolali camp was that there was a 'trooping season'.
Before the Great War, if a soldier became 'time expired' while serving overseas (that is, East of Suez), he was retained with the colours for an additional year (see: 'Old Soldier Sahib' by Frank Richards), at the end of that period, he was posted to a holding camp, (in this case Deolali), awaiting transport home for final discharge at his home depot, the extra time being deducted from his reserve obligation.
If the date of the soldier's discharge from service 'with the colours' fell a week after the end of the trooping season and if the Regiment was einefficient, slow at processing the paperwork, or if someone just 'slipped up' - or if the swaddie in question was a trouble maker - it was possible for a man to wait almost six months at Deolali.

More thread wander. Colin generally pronounced Coal-in here in western Canada. The way a Scots friend of mine also pronounces it. Cawlin often heard in the States, but dunno which is the more common pronunciation.

Does that ring your bell? Lemman/lemane is old English for lover/dear beloved person/mistress.

My mother's maiden name was Salmon (yes, just like the fish).

My brother's name is Carl, and his girlfriend's name is Karlsson--her family (who are, obviously, Scandinavian) think he should take her name if they marry.

My first name is "Alethea" (Ah LEH thee ah), which doesn't go well with most last names, so I guess if I ever do get married I'll have to be choosy ;).

SRS, which southerners do you mean? Here in Nashville the hyphenated last name is pretty common.

My maiden name was Feathers. (no I am not making this up) You would think that everyone knows how to spell "feathers" but trust me, they don't. And Caudell? Ha. It's only got 7 letters but people manage to screw that up too.

I think I'd like to be one of those one-name people. "Athena" has a nice ring to it. :-)

Dave, as I understand it new arrivals were usually dispersed to their Units pretty quickly and not held at Deolali, but there was a large Military Hospital there that had a mental Hospital attached, as you rightly pointed out. However the sitting with not much to do while waiting to get home was reckoned to be very wearing on the patience of the ordinary soldier, Like being in a Prison camp.

I always thought that the main reason for many soldiers going crazy at Deolali was that it was also the holding camp for many new recruits who were not aclimatised to India and were therefore likely to suffer from sun and heat stroke. There was also a sanitorium there, where serving soldiers who had mental problems were sent.

Easiest one I can think of would be "Vows". Or you could change it to "Vowels" so that the pronunciation is clear, but that would look a bit silly ("... and her boyfriend Jack Consonant..." ;-)

Or you could just accept that people will mispronounce it, and think of your name pronounced as "Vohls" instead of "Vowels". "Coh-lin" Powell is an obvious example of that, since his name was pronounced with a short "o" until his family moved to the US and found that Americans say the name "Colin" differently.

Yes, you can use any name you please without the necesssity of a legal name change, but if you are going to do business under that name (ie if people are going to make checks out to your "stage name") you need to fill out a "fictitious name" or "dba" (short for "doing business as") declaration at your bank. Otherwise, you can't deposit or cash the checks.

Businesses do it all the time. Many businesses in the U.S. are doing business under a name different from their legal name, particularly in cases where a business has changed hands but the new owners want to keep the old name.

Well, the best way to find out if you like a name, I am told, is to go out and yell it to the back "forty" as if you're calling someone in to supper. The story goes that the new mother was going to call her son "Deuteronomy" until so advised by her wise mother-in-law. So after tongue-twisting at the back door, she ended up calling him "Jimmy".

You know you're still going to have to spell it some times. But how about the obvious - Sally "Free"? Uplifting but simple - and if you are paying attention, it makes you smile every time you say it.

Avoid the Du Lally as proposed by "bystander", it derives from the large holding camp at Deolali near Bombay where "time served " soldiers waited (sometimes for many months) until a troopship with space to bring them home arrived and as they had no duties above the basic routine they were very bored and ocasionally went crazy, this was called "Deolali tap" which was "folk processed" into a synonym for crazy in Blighty

My surname is Vowles (pronouncing the 'ow' as in ouch!)I have to spell it out all the time when ording things on the phone etc. People mispronounce it because it's too close to 'bowles', they find it embarassing. It is my married name and I'm in the process of getting divorced so I have a choice. I do feel changing it might be disloyal to my children tho', well, my boy anyway. My maiden name was Stamford, but that was always being mis-spelled. Keep dishing 'em out, there might be a free lemonade for the one who comes up with a winner!

one way is to simply go through lists of people you admire, living OR dead, and find one that 'fits' you. Practice writing it, think of all the nickmanes it could generate...and begin...
