Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: beardedbruce Date: 22 Jul 09 - 01:56 PM Or I can take my $10, divide it by the perhaps 1% of the world that would, if they knew about it, like to come to the Getaway. that is 10/700,000,000 . How many others need to donate before anyone can come??? |
Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: beardedbruce Date: 22 Jul 09 - 01:26 PM There might be in the future ( not sure how invited guests are helped) and I would contribute to it, as well. I contribute to the scholarship fund ( via donation) each year, and can offer my 100 shares of GM, and 1300 shares of Circut City stock, as well. I can try to help one person here (and keep Dani from being disappointed). There are probably thousands more that could use help, but I can only take it one person at a time. Have you a suggestion of someone else who we should be trying to help? ( I have several local friends that are presently unemployed, as I have been in the past: Who should I be helping??) |
Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: Emma B Date: 22 Jul 09 - 01:18 PM I can think of people who would be excellent contributors to the Getaway who, through long term unemployment etc, you may not have had the chance to meet or hear Bruce as they've not been able to afford previous trips. If there was such a fund that gave priority to such people I'd be pleased to contribute to it too. |
Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: beardedbruce Date: 22 Jul 09 - 01:09 PM In a perfect world, we would bring all of them. I have met Skarpi, and would certainly pay $10 for a ticket to a houseconcert to hear him- Should I NOT offer to cover that much of his costs, given the current state of the Icelandic economy? There may well be others: Please feel free to bring forth names and circumstances, and if enough want to, those may also get paid trips. But no-one is forcing anyone to contribute, or claiming this is other than it is. |
Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: Mrs.Duck Date: 22 Jul 09 - 01:02 PM There are a lot of people who are or have been unemployed and who would have loved to get to the Getaway. Should we single one out? |
Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: open mike Date: 22 Jul 09 - 12:51 PM I have sent a request to the Getaway scholarship committee and here is the info i got off the web site... http://ceimd.com/php/public.php Payment Notes: If you need a scholarship or price break, read below on how to contact Charlie Baum, head of the Scholarship Committee. If you need to pay in foreign currency, and don't wish to register on-line, contact Dick Greenhaus at Camsco to make arrangements. Past President Charlie Baum 706 Bonifant St. Silver Spring,MD 20910 301-587-2286 there is a link to e-mail hm in the listings of board members. (not staff) and i sent a message Charlie explaining about Skarpi, our transportation fund, a request for scholarship and info about this discussion thread. Skarpi, what say you, are you game to come if we work out these details?? |
Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: beardedbruce Date: 22 Jul 09 - 12:47 PM I'll look into it, jacqui. I should be able to find time for that. Want to PM address to send checks to ( in US)? I'm not sure I still have it. |
Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: jacqui.c Date: 22 Jul 09 - 12:20 PM Well, I'm in the UK right now but most of this could be done on line and I generally can find some time. If no-one else can do it I'll volunteer to get things organised. I've also got the advantage that, if any UK 'Catters want in on this, I can collect sterling as well as dollars, especially if the money can be got to me before I head back home on August 18th. I trust that the matter of a scholarship can be handled separately by the FSGW people? |
Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: beardedbruce Date: 22 Jul 09 - 08:59 AM There's an Ikea in College Park/Beltsville, MD, not far from BWI, if he wants to swing by there. OK, so we need to get a coordinator, find out the cost of air fare, and hear back from Skarpi... |
Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: GUEST,Dani Date: 21 Jul 09 - 08:57 PM Count me in, and also very close to Ikea Charlotte, if you want me to run your resume 'round : ) Dani |

Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: Ferrara Date: 21 Jul 09 - 05:43 PM I don't think it would be a problem to buy his airline tickets from the U.S. if the money can be found. |
Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: maeve Date: 21 Jul 09 - 05:14 PM I could donate something nice to be put in the silent auction. I don't have any cash. Seems I'll never get to go myself, but I'd love for Skarpi to be there. maeve |
Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: beardedbruce Date: 21 Jul 09 - 05:12 PM Does a country's economic collapse qualify?? ( I can bring a few more instruments to the silent auction...) Maybe Skarpi can bring some ( sets of ) coins over, and we can auction them. Anybody in the airline/travel business who can look into the cost of the flight from Iceland to BWI ( or cheapest US, I guess)? |
Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: Nancy King Date: 21 Jul 09 - 05:06 PM Yes, there is a scholarship fund for the Getaway, and lots of folks have taken advantage of it in the past. It is replenished each year by our silent auction and other donations. |
Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: beardedbruce Date: 21 Jul 09 - 05:04 PM Not for airfare! But for the cost of the camp... Have to look at that and see what needs to be done. |
Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: katlaughing Date: 21 Jul 09 - 05:01 PM I think the Getaway has scholarships available, right? |
Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: beardedbruce Date: 21 Jul 09 - 04:59 PM All good questions. Some could stay here- ie, we could prepay the Getaway costs. Transportation? Not sure if it can be paid at this end. Expenses? not sure what is required. But it sure would be nice to hear him again. |
Subject: RE: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? (Getaway) From: MMario Date: 21 Jul 09 - 04:57 PM We need to cover transport and Getaway, yes? Does Skarpi have paypal? Do we have any easy way of getting the money **TO HIM** once collected? |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? From: Rapparee Date: 21 Jul 09 - 04:45 PM I'll kick in US $25.00, though. |
Subject: RE: BS: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? From: Rapparee Date: 21 Jul 09 - 04:41 PM I'd do it, but I'm going to be non compos mentis with a Bookmobile and other things for the next couple or threee months. |
Subject: BS: Anyone with time to run SkarpiFund? From: beardedbruce Date: 21 Jul 09 - 12:44 PM It starts with Subject: RE: Getaway 2009 Program Planning From: skarpi - PM Date: 12 Jul 09 - 01:32 PM hallo all , I am not sure if I can make this year , I only have job until 13 th of September :>) unless some one offer me a job in IKEA US , no just a joke . I made a promise to Dani , and now I may not be able to keep that promise :>(( I followed this with Subject: RE: Getaway 2009 Program Planning From: beardedbruce - PM Date: 12 Jul 09 - 04:00 PM I'll offer to cover $10 of Skarpi's costs. Anybody else want to finance his vocal contributions? Bruce 8-{E and a number of people have expressed interest. Is there someone here who has time to 1. check into how much we need to get Skarpi to the Getaway 2. act as a central point and collection agency |
