Subject: RE: BS: the first record and LP you ever bought From: Alice Date: 30 Mar 04 - 09:15 AM ...or maybe not the Lonely Bull title, it's been so long the record is lost somewhere. I know I bought it for that particular track, but probably a later title by Herb Alpert. I don't think he sang anything on the Lonely Bull. It wasn't Whipped Cream, either (what a scandalous cover that was at the time). Anyway, the album with Herb Alpert singing "this guy's in love". |

I inherited my mother's record collection when she died, all the folk and sixties rock I could stand. Prior to that, I had a little 8-track player in my room and the only two tapes I had were one of Elvis, and one of the Chipmunks. Once I got the record player, the first vinyl I bought? Don't judge, but I think it was a Wham! 45...LMAO ~JE |

Subject: RE: BS: the first record and LP you ever bought From: hobbitwoman Date: 28 Mar 04 - 09:57 PM The first LP I ever owned was the first Monkees album... I got it for Christmas the year I was 13, along with my first stereo. The Monkees was THE top tv show that year, and like 75% of other 13 year old girls that year, I was madly "in love with" Davy Jones. The first LP I actually bought with my own money, was the second Monkees album. I conned my younger brother into helping me take soda bottles to the store for the refund by telling him he could have half ownership of the album. The first 45 I owned was something by Paul Revere and the Raiders. The first song I remember my dad getting mad about was "Something's Burning (And I Think It's Love)" by Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. (Fortunately by the time my son got into heavy metal, Dad's hearing had deteriorated to the point where he couldn't understand the lyrics.) But the first folk album I ever bought will stand out in my mind forever - it was Joan Baez "One Day at a Time". I was 17, and that's where my love affair with folk music began. I recently bought that album in CD, as it's been years since I've owned a working turntable. Still have a lot of my vynil though. Just nothing to play them on. Annie |

Subject: RE: BS: the first record and LP you ever bought From: Metchosin Date: 28 Mar 04 - 02:01 PM I thought 16 2/3 RPM was for spoken word recordings. You could get twice as much stuff on a record and didn't need the dynamic range and band width. Bass whacks take up big groove space. Because it was spoken word, it didn't take up much groove space. I never heard of music being recorded on 16 and 2/3 RPM in North America, any EP's I had were at 45 RPM too. |

Subject: RE: BS: the first record and LP you ever bought From: ray bucknell Date: 28 Mar 04 - 09:04 AM The first album I remember buying with my own money was the Chad Mitchell Trio "Singin Our Minds." I was probably in about fourth grade, and it's still just about my favorite album (especially since it's now come out on CD and sounds so much cleaner than the vinyl record did). Before that I'd received several albums as Christmas presents: the red vinyl Alvin and the Chipmunks LP, the Best of the Chad Mitchell Trio on Kapp, and the early Bill Cosby album with the bit about "Kindergarten." I never bought many 45s, but the ones I did get were mostly bubblegum bands like the Cowsills. Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" does come to mind, though, as one of my more "daring" purchases. Little Patty - "He's my blond-headed stompy-wompy real gone surfer boy" (or was that the first line?) My first CD (needed in 1997 when I finally bought a CD player) was supposed to be Joan Baez "Five", but the shop didn't have a copy! So I ordered it & bought 4 or 5 others instead. I needed the CD as my very old copy, taped late 70's or early 80's from a friend's battered record, was on it's very wheeeeezy whirrry last legs & I couldn't imagine life without it. sandra |

Subject: RE: BS: the first record and LP you ever bought From: Don Firth Date: 27 Mar 04 - 09:18 PM José Iturbi playing Chopin's Polonaise in Am, following seeing the 1945 movie A Song to Remember, a Hollywoodized, romanticized, and pretty inaccurate biography of Frederic Chopin, starring Cornel Wilde, with Merle Oberon as George Sand. Iturbi did bravura performances playing piano on the sound track while Wilde did a good job of faking it. Single 12" 78 rpm (this was back when music was carved into a stone disk with a chisel, rotated on a potter's wheel, and played with a saber-toothed tiger tusk for a needle). The first LPs (33 1/3 rpm) I bought were a two record set: the full-length recording of Rigoletto by Guiseppe Verdi, with Jan Peerce singing the Duke, Erna Berger as Gilda, and Leonard Warren as Rigoletto. The first full-length opera recorded in a studio, it's now a collectors item. Still got it. Still sounds great! How square is that!?? First folk records I bought were a Burl Ives and a Richard Dyer-Bennet (yup, still square), both 10" LPs, and two 10" 78 rpm records that Walt Robertson did on Linden Records, a local company, bought one afternoon early in 1952 (just to put things into historical perspective, Joan Baez would have been about eleven years old at the time). I bought my first guitar a few months later. It was a Regal: $9.95 for the guitar, and with fiberboard case and a copy of Nick Manoloff's "How to Play the Guitar," the total price was $15.00. It sounded a bit like it was made of apple-crate wood (and probably was), but the fretting was accurate and the action was fairly soft. Easy to learn on. I was very lucky. Don Firth |

Subject: RE: BS: the first record and LP you ever bought From: Thomas the Rhymer Date: 27 Mar 04 - 03:56 PM First three albums... Beethoven's Eroica, which came with a strange floppy-disk kind of record that may have been a forty-five, of the conductor (Leonard Bernstein) discussing the structure the symphony itself, and going on at some length about music theory... But that was all put on the backburner in my life a year or so later when I got "Morrison Hotel" by the Doors... Then "Deja vu" hit my parent's stack 'em up mono record player, and the beginning of "Carry On" was consistantly turned up to the point of that pesky speaker distortion we all remember so fondly... But my favorite music before I ever bought any myself, and Baroque still is... "Baroque Trumpets", on the 'Nonesuch' label. |
