Geoff Kaufman is most widely known for his music of the sea, a specialty he has honed over the last seventeen years at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut as chanteyman, foreman of Interpretive Music Programs, and director of the annual Sea Music Festival. His first solo recording, "Fair Stood the Wind," is an exemplary selection of traditional and contemporary maritime music.

THE SINGING CONQUERORS

The Singing Conquerors, NYC's only bluegrass gospel group, plays a unique style of music which blends Anglo- and African-American musical traditions. Founded in 1992, the group has played for a wide variety of audiences -- at the White House, the Ralph Stanley Bluegrass Festival, and on the Bobby Jones Gospel Hour on BET. Upcoming appearances include the Podunk Blueegrass Festival as well as the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, in July 2001.

Pinewoods Series Concert to be held at Advent Lutheran Church.

New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club proudly presents legendary folksinger-songwriter Bill Staines in concert at the Advent Lutheran Church, Broadway and West 93rd Street in New York City, on Thursday evening, May 10, 2001. The show begins at 8 PM. This concert is one in a series of six per year presented by Pinewoods and is free to club members. General public admission is $13. Seniors citizens and students pay only $9 each. Children¹s admission is just $6. The nearest subway stop is 96th Street on the 1, 2, 3, and 9 lines. For more than 30 years Bill Staines has traveled back and forth across North America, singing his songs and delighting audiences at festivals, folksong societies, colleges, concert halls, clubs, and coffee houses.

Bill has become one of the most popular singers on the folk circuit today and averages around 200 concert dates a year. Bill weaves a gentle blend of wit and humor into his performances. Bill sings mostly his own songs, and his music is a slice of Americana, reflecting with the same ease his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of the Yukon. Among his best known compositions are A Place In the Choir, River, and Roseville Fair.

Between his own creations, Bill intersperses songs ranging from traditional folk ballads to contemporary country, and he enjoys having the audience participate in many of the numbers. Bill is also acclaimed for his yodeling.

Thanks for posting this correction. For this coming April only, the Open Mike will take place on the fourth Wednesday, i.e. April 25, 2001.

Beginning in May, the Open Mike will be held on the third Wednesday of each month, as it had been at the three previous locations.

New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club now has a new home for our monthly Open Microphone. We will continue this event on the third Wednesday of each month at:

Sessions run from 7:00 to 10:00 pm and will begin PROMPTLY!

Admission is $5 at the door. Drinks are available, but there is no minimum purchase required.

High Powered A Capella Duo at Polytechnic in Pinewoods ³Folk Off-Broadway² Series.

The NexTradition, traditional a capella singers Ken Schatz and Alison Kelley, will appear at Wunsch Hall, Polytechnic University in Brooklyn on Friday evening, April 6, 2001, as part of the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club¹s ³Folk Off-Broadway² concert series produced in cooperation with the school. The show starts at 8:00 PM sharp. General admission is $10. Pinewoods members pay only $9, and Polytechnic students will be admitted free.

The NexTradition -- called TNT for short -- can best be described as traditional music in motion. Two voices. Dangerous harmonies. Goose-bump images. Driving rhythms and roaring choruses. Born in June 1997 at the Mystic Sea Music Festival in Mystic, Connecticut, The NexTradition was christened by Heather Wood (of The Young Tradition) on the back of a beer menu a few months later.

TNT performs traditional music from North America, the British Isles, and around the world: sea songs and chanteys, Gospel and blues, work songs of the railroads, mines, prisons, factories, and fields.

Wunsch Hall, the Polytechnic University student center, is located in Metrotech Center in downtown Brooklyn, easily accessible by public transportation. The nearest subway stop is Lawrence Street on the M, N. and R lines. Ample parking is available after 7:00 PM.

Bill will appear at the Advent Lutheran Church in New York City (Broadway & West 93rd Street) on Thursday, May 10, 2001, at 8:00 PM. General admission is $13, so joining the club is a particularly good deal, particularly of you join as a family. But here's an even better deal. Come to any of the Pinewoods series concerts (e.g. Bruce Molsky on 4/13/01, Bill Staines on 5/10/01) and pay the regular price. Then if you like what you hear, ask to join on the way out.
