Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival 2008 From: Charley Noble Date: 17 Mar 08 - 07:24 PM The contracts have been sent out from Mystic Sea Music Festival HQ and I was gratified to receive one. I'll be sharing a C. Fox Smith Workshop with Danny and Joyce McLeod and with Bob Zentz. We've all poured a lot of energy into reviving interest in Smith's nautical poetry, making the poems accessible on-line to the public, adapting them for singing, and performing the songs. In addition Danny has played a key role in researching this poet's life. The draft anthology of her poems that Jim Saville and I have assembled (and referenced) now contains more than 550 poems, and may be accessed at the Oldpoetry website under her name: click here for website! I'm certainly looking forward to this workshop, as well as everything else I can get involved in at the Festival. No sleep for me! I didn't see any mention of any Thursday evening activity this year in the materials I received. Has Thursday been dropped from the schedule? Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival 2008 From: GUEST,Marge Bruchac Date: 09 Mar 08 - 10:38 PM Hi, all Just a clarifying note regarding a post that reads as follows: "Marge Bruchac is the daughter of Joe Bruchac, an exceptionally fine Native American singer, instrumentalist (flute and drum as far as I'm aware), storyteller, and author, from the southern Adirondacks. Google him. His daughter carries on the tradition with her husband, Justin. They have been performers at the Old Songs Festival in Altamont, NY, and will be there again this year. Highly recommended, at least by me." My father's name was indeed Joseph Bruchac, but he was a taxidermist and author who passed away years ago. The famous storyteller Joe Bruchac is my BROTHER. My brother IS a bit older than I am, but I guess this means I must look young for my age! So, thanks for the flattery! Wli nanawalmezi, be well, Marge Bruchac |
Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival 2008 From: Charley Noble Date: 07 Mar 08 - 08:07 PM Linda- We'd love to have you join us on this side of the Great Pond. The Mystic Sea Music Festival at its best is the best, and I hope that this year it is the best of best! But than there's Yorkshire, and all the wonderful things we hear about that are going on there for music. Whatever is one to do? Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival 2008 From: Charley Noble Date: 06 Mar 08 - 09:45 PM According to my most recent Mystic Seaport mailing, inviting me to support "Friends of the Sea Music Festiva,l" the acknowledged performers include the Inuit Cultural performers, a trio from Canada, performing traditional throat singing; Calico Jack, a dynamic duo from the Chesapeake Bay; Hand in Hand, featuring Marge Bruchac, an Abenaki Indian and her husband Justin Kennick; and the Johnson Girls (whom I've actually heard of). I'll probably renew my support. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival 2008 From: Rabbi-Sol Date: 15 Feb 08 - 03:47 PM Sorry but do to a quirk in the Jewish (lunar) calendar I will not be able to make it this year. This is a leap year and the Sunday that I usually go is the eve of the Shavuos holiday. Given the volume of traffic on I-95 I would never be able to make it home by one hour before sundown when the holiday begins. I am no longer permitted to drive or ride as a passenger in a vehicle once the holiday begins. SOL |

Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival 2008 From: GUEST,iancarterb Date: 02 Feb 08 - 05:22 PM I've sung Valparaiso in a Rowboat with Mathew Moeller, another Seattle singer. Since he went more or less literally overboard and bought a 1930s wooden boat, the original hole in the water to put money and time into, to live on, I have only seen him twice. I wonder why... |
Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival 2008 From: Barry Finn Date: 01 Feb 08 - 09:43 PM Can't wait to hear you & Rika, Jon, but I'm afraid that I might keep you up past your bedtime, Heh, Heh. I've got a recent one for you hear too, "Venezuela To Trinidad" by Roger Hussey, a crew member on the Norwegian MST* Borjholt, he's one of the Gloucester crowd. He's written a dandy. We'll swap shit instead of spit. This one's been getting so much play between Gloucester & Portsmouth that it's getting killed by requests. "Whispering Don" Sineti, that's a very cute name forhim, wonder if he'll allow it to stick? Haven't heard "Valparaiso in a Rowboat" but I'll be looking for it from now until then. See you all there Barry |
Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival 2008 From: Jon Bartlett Date: 01 Feb 08 - 08:41 PM Thanks, JS - it's a cracker of a song and I'm glad it's getting known. See you at Mystic. Jon Bartlett |
Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival 2008 From: Greg B Date: 01 Feb 08 - 07:51 PM Wow. "Great" "ukelele" and "mandolin" used in the same sentence. There's a first. |
Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival 2008 From: GUEST,Guest, JS Date: 01 Feb 08 - 07:36 PM I brought out 'Valparaiso in a Rowboat' at a DC area shanty sing, and no one seemed to know it, though it went over well. I picked it up from Dan Roberts in Seattle, who does a great ukelele style mandolin accompaniment, so my experience of it is as a west coast song. Hope to make it to Mystic this year for the first time. JS |
Subject: RE: Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival 2008 From: Charley Noble Date: 01 Feb 08 - 09:26 AM So let's reprise who has acknowledged being invited so far as performers: Johnson Girls Bob Zentz Danny and Joyce McLeod Cheerily, Charley Noble |

It will be a first for me, but I've go to make it...I think Curmudgeon will ban me from the shanty sessions in Portsmouth if I miss this year. ;-) Looking forward to meeting my fellow 'catters.
