While checking the TV this AM for a weather forecast I saw a Mitt Romney for President commercial. The same sort of thing as the slick ads that usually don't show up until sometime near when a vote can actually be cast. I about puked (not because of who it was for, but due to the fact it was there at all). It's going to be a long twenty months.

As I see it, the likelihood of a successful dark horse candidate is next to nil. A dark horse occurs when no consensus can be reached...usually at an open convention. But there are no open conventions, only dog and pony shows for preselected candidates from the primary system. In past years, primaries settled on the nominees by mid to late summer. In 2008, it is possible--perhaps even likely--that the nominees will be selected by Spring. This transforms the election season from a weeding out process leading to the convention to an eight month one on one campaign.
This means fewer chances to hear alternative ideas and have alternative choices. This means that the challenger only needs to attack the incumbent without offering ideas of his/her own. This means that every vote an incumbent makes during this silly season is predicated more on how it plays with the constituency, less than being a principled position.
Anyone who has aspirations for a presidential try, needs to have declared...yesterday!
BTW, California, as I understand it, will hold a Presidential primary in February, a general primary in April, a run-off in June and the national election in November. No wonder nobody takes election seriously enough to show up at the polls.

McCain still has 2 years to the election..and if he is elected, a minimum of 4 years... he is 70 now...if he were elected and served 2 terms, he'd be 80. That would be the oldest... Pretty strenuous work, even for a guy who has survived a LOT.

I dunno...but if he were nominated, it would be kinda important to see who is chosen as his running mate.

Well, I am a shallow American female voter. I don't mind looking at Hilary or Hillary whichever it is...I think she is fairly attractive. But I hate it when she screams. And for some reason I do not like looking at Mitt Romney. I don't know why. This will all be included in people's voting decisions, conscious or unconscious. I think Obama is handsome and Edwards is neutral and McCain unfortunately is looking ailing and like he has aged quite a bit lately, like the spark has gone out of him. I hope he is in good health but I wonder. Choosing a president has some features like choosing a mate. mg

There is sometimes a subtle difference between "This is what I believe," and "This is my perception of how others believe." I took Don's statement about Hillary and the bathing suit to be a commentary on the shallowness of the typical American voter, particularly the ones with penises, not a swipe at women.

In recent years I've become more resigned to the mindset that thinks of women as being somehow subservient and inferior to men. It seems a lost cause. Sometimes, however, I still flare, especially in the presence of men I expect better of.

When I was a kid in a large family, I had three brothers within a range of 1 1/2 years younger to three years older to me. Over and over it would happen that the boys were allowed to do something that I was not- camp in our woods overnight, raise rabbits, get first dibs on going swimming when the car was almost full and on and on - and I would be told that "They are boys." And over and over again I would wail, What difference does that make?"

I never got an answer that satisfied me. And I still haven't.

When my snotty Mary Kay coated middle management sister in law declared with obvious practiced repeatition "I DON"T like Hillary", it appeared to me that she was accustomed to posing for the approval of the men in her workplace. I'd suggest distinguishing between the two definitions of man/men. One of them is gender-specific, and one is species-specific. I've met very few women who resented the species they belonged to. But I've met many who resented "belonging" to men.

Donuel, you may have meant it as satire, but The Daily Show, I would think, mostly attracts a crowd that would agree with the women that have commented here, unless you're postulating a right wing objector to the show. Even so, keep in mind this forum is pretty international, and subtle political satire specific to a particular country is gonna fly right over some heads - mine definitely included. To be honest, as a Canadian it is sometimes difficult for me to see any big political difference between the Democrats and Republicans, although individuals may stand out.

God bless it all, man- the woman is 60 years old! When will men realize that most women are not 'babes' all their lives? Same as some men are not studs or hunks.

When will western men - as the male of the species - recognize that the ability in a mature woman to think and understand and plan and communicate is more important than whether she has a pretty face or good legs?\

It is a put down, whether the man means it that way or not. It derives in my opinion from the deeply ingrained belief that men are in charge of the world and women, excuse me: ladies need only to smell nice and look pretty.

I agree with you, Sorcha- men, as a rule, think they are complimenting the female of the species when they call her a "lady". It may be sweet of them but why? She is a woman. Lady came along much later and I suspect it had to do with the commoner's desire to be 'upper class'.

Just in case the Democrates, under the stewardship of former Govenor Dr. Dean, can not find a gay black muslim woman with mob ties to run for President, 2008 will be the year of the dark horse, strange bedfellows and a flood of candidates creepier than the crew who ran for Govenor during the great California recall vote.

Like stink bugs coming out of the wood work most of the politicians are announcing via a non announcement announcement merely to pad their war chest, collect funds for an exploratory commission or just help people remember thier name. Who now will ever forget John Vilsack?

There are the serious long standing candidates along with their huge piles of TV ad cash, but they are all destined to sink before the finish line.
Like Guliani going in circles with one oar in the water, and Hillary who will turn off voters after a picture of her in a two piece swim suit is released. Then there is Nascar Mc Cain in the Bob Jones car who crashes into the swift boat of Mitt Romney and last but not least, Barak Obama who may have the misfortune of finding an actual Rock Star found dead of an overdose in the bathtub of his hotel room.   

There will be a WILD mix and match game pairing Hillary and Gore until wife swapping charges are leveled. Some will even try to float serious trial balloons of a Kusinich Nader ticket, not to mention running mates like Cheney-Gingrich 08 and GHWB-Quayle redux.
On the lighter side, at certain Washington parties when neo cons have enough cocktail courage they titter over the joke of a Rumsfeld-Poindexter ticket but sober up immediately at the mention of Jeb/Rove in 08.

Wha... Did you hear that? It was the whispering campaign of Schwartenegger/Maria Schwartzenegger for President with their slogan "Damn the Constitution, full speed ahead". Only people with Hummers could actually display their bumper sticker.

We may have all expected that the next Presidential candidates would be either an actor a Govenor, a Congressman or a Senator,(or any combination therof) but no, in 08 I predict a magnificent dark horse.

I forsee the Republicans pairng a rocket scientist for President and to appease their base an evangelist for Vice President.
