Hiya

Being a glutton for things that are really good for me, I'm going to be at the Gaol in Derby on Thursday to see Jeff again.

If you haven't been to the Derby Gaol, it's a really special place. In addition to the great singing from the floor, the room is really the old Derby Gaol. Having a good (I mean brilliant) guest is the icing on the cake.

Sylvia

Anybody get to the Crabshell Inn last Saturday? Apparently, they have an American Series, and Jeff really raved about the place. Anyway, three more dates in his current tour and then we get him back:

Wednesday, 16 May, 8:30 PM
Llantrisant Folk Club
Windsor Hotel, Llantrisant Road; Pontyclun, Wales

Thursday, 17 May, 8:00 PM
Derby Heritage Traditional Music Club
Old Derby Gaol, Friargate, Derby

Friday, 18 May, 8:00 PM
Swindon Folksingers Club
Milton Road Club, off Faringdon Road; Swindon, Wiltshire

I remember the Llantrisant club from visiting last year. They have a great crowd and it should be a really good night. Cheery hellos to all (Dr Price? etc)!!
Barbara

Saw Jeff last night at Sharps!!! He was excellent, a nice variety of songs from various points on the Eastern Seaboard and he did his "Seth Davy" bit as well (You know, " and the doll on the end of the plank was dancing, as he sang, with a smile on his face.....!) Brilliant!!! if you can get to see him while he is !"over here" my advice is to do so.

Ah yes! The fantastic and hilarious limberjack, who goes by the name of "Little Jeff." He is certainly a memorable fellow!

Well, reports from the Northeast indicate that Jeff's tour went swimmingly up that way. The Ryburn crowd sounds like a wild band of eager singers. Jeff's been meeting up with old friends and music-making comrades along the way. At the Davy Lamp, both Louis Killen and Tom McConville made it to the show. That club had a contingent of rousing singers, too.

The second half of the tour does indeed begin on Sunday at the Tiger Inn in Long Eaton, Nottingham. Let's hope "Little Jeff" is all rested up and ready for some serious dancing!!

Attended the Lincoln concert at the Drill Hall and really enjoyed the mix of stories and songs and the little wooden bloke on a stick that dances!

Sooz - thanks for that! Coincidentally, I looked into this thread just 5 minutes after you'd posted, and was able to catch the final 15 minutes of the radio show. What a wonder is the Internet!

Hi Barbara

Jeff's Llantrisant booking is in our diary, I'm sure it will be an evening to remember. It's a shame you're not going to be here as well though - we've great memories (and photos) of your visit last year.   Carole

I know what you are saying Barbara. I also realise thats its not Jeff's fault. If the clubs are happy, then its not a problem.
I have seen some video's of him on the Internet and he looks a very interesting person.
So looking forward to it.
Cheers
Les

Oh, hi, Villan. That is a great question and one worth pondering. I didn't book these gigs, but I'm trying to book a US tour for Jeff right now, and here are some of the elements I've been dealing with.

1. The artist is travelling from afar, needs as many gigs as possible in a relatively brief time, and takes everything offered.
2. The club hosts are informed about the possible conflict, but do not feel that it IS a conflict, and agree to the bookings.
3. Sometimes a given date (let's say a Saturday) is quite busy with a variety of entertainment available, but a date only a few days later (say, a Thursday) has nothing much on. The thought is that those who chose something else on Sat will come out for this artist on Thurs. A kind of spread-the-wealth mentality.
4. Sometimes, the first gig offer is for a relatively small amount of money, but one takes it, to have a gig. Then, 2 weeks later, a large gig offer comes in. Well... you don't say no.

All of these things have happened with the tour I'm working on. There are other issues, I'm sure. One way to go is to let the artist decide FOR the club owners what constitutes a conflict, and refuse to take another gig within, say, an hour's drive. This brings a conflict with No. 1, above, though.

Anyway, I'm glad you'll take in one of Jeff's shows in your area. Don't be too hard on him! He did not make the bookings. But he's happy to be there, and to meet other traddies and lovers of folk song.
Barbara

I plan to see him, but I can't understand why when performers book gigs in Lincolnshire, they do 2 gigs pretty close to each other within days of each other. I don't beleive that is helpful to the clubs or the performer. I am on about the Lincoln gig on the 25th April and Grimsby on the 29th.
Lincolnshire is very rural and most of us who need our fix, will travel quite some distance to see a performer.
Can't agents think a bit more carefully when they do these things.

I can go to either, but will in actual fact go to Grimsby

Refreshing. Jeff begins 6 nights in a row in the north tonight. Included are Grimsby, Lincoln, W.Yorks, and others - see schedule posted at top. Tonight, it's Pete Coe's club, Ryburn, at 8PM.

Thanks, Nancy and Kendall, for the supportive comments. Moira and Malcolm did play driver-and-host for Jeff in London - thank you very much. And Mick fairly nailed it when he said that Jeff is "a one-man storehouse of American traditional knowledge." You should see his home library! As one of his friends said long ago, at some party at Jeff's house, "Wow! This place is like the Library of Congress, but with BEER!!"

I urge any of you within driving distance to get down to the Lewes Arms tonight. It's Valmai's club and is well-known for its workshops and concerts. Lately, they've had George Papavgeris, Judy Cook, Tom McConville and a host of others of similar quality. It will be a fine evening.

That's Lewes Arms on Mount Place (parallel to Fisher St) in Lewes, East Sussex. It's an 8PM gathering.

Jeff and Barbara stayed at our house last year - they did a floor spot while checking out our dear friends Gypsy Reel, Claudette Langille's Vermont-based band. We know Jeff through seeing and hearing him at numerous festivals - if you're anywhere near the Windsor Hotel, Pontyclun, on Wednesday May 16, Jeff deserves to be heard. He's a one-man storehouse of American traditional knowledge.

Incidentally, The Windsor is under new management now, and the Abbot Ale is vastly improving!

Guest: BB here with my semi-annual announcement about Jeff Warner's current UK tour. He's just arrived for a stay of about a month, and has no fewer than 16 gigs this time. He begins in London, then rambles about from Cornwall to Tyne & Wear, and even over to Wales (at last!!), with many other stops in between. In my thread of last autumn , I posted this reminder of who I'm talking about:

"For those who can't quite remember right now why his name looks familiar, Jeff is the son of Frank and Anne Warner, eminent collectors of American folk songs from the 1930s to the 1950s. He plays banjo, guitar and concertina, as well as small "pocket-instruments" and sings primarily traditional American songs in acoustic performance. For years, he worked with Jeff Davis, but has been more-or-less a solo artist for the past 7 or 8 years."

And this thread announces his solo CD release, September 2005.
