The US Army Medical group was among the first to use superglue (cyanoacrylate adhesive). They used it to replace suturing in liver operations. (ever tried to sew a piece of liver?)

One of my front teeth is a crown. It works loose occasionally and at the first instance of this happening, I hied me to the dentist.

Apart from having to wait 25 minutes past my appointment time, I was rather miffed at him taking one look, whipping out a tube of ordinary UHU superglue, applying it to my tooth and sticking the tooth back with the comment 'that'll be £95 please'. £50 for the initial appointment and £45 for a dab of superglue from a tube costing £1.95.

The other strange use for superglue is saving fingerprints with the vapour, at crime scenes.

I had heard that Super Glue was used to close wounds during the Vietnam War. Good story, but I wasn't quite sure I believed it. This Google Search made a believer of me - although apparently, it's better to use medical grade Super Glue.

Superglue comes in several types....(I use it almost every day)

The thinest (commercial grade) stuff IS almost instant, depending on what you're gluing. I NEVER work without the solvent within reach, and I have needed it several times. The stuff you buy in the tiny tubes at the hardware store is 'medium/thin' and gives you 10-15 seconds for items with a moisture content...like skin.

The guy in the news story would NOT have wanted to move until help came once he sat there a minute or so....pain......fortunately, it is not really harmful unless you inhale a bunch of fumes or get it in your eyes. (It is sometimes used medically).

Isn't it funny that when you want to stick your fingers to something, it won't work but when you DON'T want to stick your fingers to the table, it will do so in an instant.

Superglue doesn't set up all THAT fast.

Some guy in South Bend, Indiana robbed a liquor store a few years back and squirted superglue on the counter. Told the clerk to put his hands in it, which the clerk did, and the guy ran out the door. The clerk than picked his hands up out of the superglue and carefully called the cops.

Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do,
I can't cycle, stuck down with crazy glue
They've made it a perfect marriage,
Twixt bike and undercarriage.
It ain't so neat, when they've stuck your seat
And you're desperate to use the loo...

SEE?? Yet another reason to use the excercise bike as a clothes rack!

Although the story was funny (well, it didn't happen to me, did it?!) I much preferred the bottle opening octopus link on the same page. That as a song challenge has far greater scope...

I think "Take Me Down Easy" would be a good title.

And "Daisy, Daisy" comes to mind...on a bicycle seat, with glue....

I'd guess they just found a big bunch of super glue at their last job and figured they might as well use it. . . . .(?).

You'd probably need pictures to tell whether there was "extreme malice" or just creativity stupidity involved. And I don't think I'd care to look at them.

I bet they COULD have done it with Duct Tape, if they had set their minds to it.

Am I alone in thinking this sounds like a personal grudge of some kind, more than a simple case of robbery for its own sake?

I suppose this could go in the "Read it in the Newspaper," but it's just too bizarre to be missed.

I'll start it in BS, but I really think it's material for a song - or several.

Thieves glue naked man to bike

Gang of thieves forces South African to strip, then ransacks his house

Reuters
Updated: 11:27 a.m. CT May 3, 2007

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - A gang stripped a South African man before gluing him to an exercise bicycle while they ransacked his house, according to a report Thursday.

SAPA news agency said the attackers, dressed in suits, hijacked a man in his 50s and forced him at gunpoint to take them to his home in Johannesburg.

"The victim was then forced to strip, after which he was superglued to the seat of an exercise bicycle, his hands were superglued, as were his feet and then his mouth was superglued shut," SAPA quoted Mark Stokoe, a spokesman for emergency services Netcare 911, as saying.

The man was rescued about three hours later when his partner arrived home, SAPA said.

South Africa is battling one of the world's highest crime rates which has prompted concerns that violence might mar the 2010 soccer World Cup, which the country is due to host.

A police spokesman could not immediately comment on the report. No one at Netcare 911 could be reached.

Or maybe it's another peep/shoodle story?

Concerns about the Soccer Cup may be expressed.
