"Charley, I misread that as 'also, no C. Fox Smith songs'" -

Must be his handwriting - I made the same misreading ...

Charley, I misread that as 'also, no C. Fox Smith songs' which struck me as a distinctly odd request even before I saw it was you!
Jim, I look forward to hearing this. Don't forget to let us know when it is ready!

The suggestion I have is for you to record four additional tracks as options, just in case the ones you lay down don't shine quite as well as you would like.

Another thought, we usually record each song two times so that any minor flubs can be more readily edited out later.

Alas, no C. Fox Smith songs! LOL

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Jim, thanks for the offer, but I've started my clean up & already found it. Silly me, fancy not looking on the floor next to the CD player!

Sorry about that...
1) Rocks of Bawn. Yes. Liam Clancy has done such a number on that particular song that no matter how well anyone ever does it, it will always be "Inspired by Liam Clancy" and for that reason is lost to the rest of us. My opinion of course. Now if you look through the list you will see "The highway of Tears"
http://www.highwayoftears.ca/ which I had written regarding a number of missing women on Highway 16. I have put this song to that tune and added a couple of lines at the end of each verse. I think it works. I hope that doesn't bother you too much. (Seriously) I can post the words here if you want.

2)Macushla: I don't know why John McCormick's is the only version you heard but at least you heard the best.
None the less; His was the style until the Folk Revival of the Late Fifties an Early Sixties when Folk Music was effectively given back to the workers and it was considered okay to sing in a less Classically trained voice.
I think that now we are in danger of losing many of those songs which I love and many do not. The song will be performed in my own "Less Classical" style but with a John McCormick style of arrangement.
3) Killkelly. Yes.

Thanks Mickey. You clearly put some thought into it.

Cheers!
Jim

Have you ever sung "Rocks of Bawn?"

Macushla?? Surely you jest.

There must be a reason why the only one I ever heard sing that was John McCormick? (SP?) He's been dead a hundred yrs. MO

I've yet to hear Kilkelly. Have you that on CD?

Nail on the head, Pete: The list of others is no less favourable than this one. I'll let it go and do the same with the next one. I'm Murshin Durkined out!

Hello Jim,

When we record a CD we are putting down a marker...this is who we are and what moves us to song. What song is asking *you* to be included? A song that keeps giving you a gentle nudge every now and then; a song that is just on the edge of your consciousness? Probably a song that has been pushed to the back by all the others on the list going, "Me! Me! Me!"

Just a thought!

Best wishes,

Peter

I think "Ned of the Hill" would be nice.

I have to agree with the general feeling--it is a great set of songs! I am particularly impressed that you've included Macushla--it was something akin to an anthem for the old-timers and it's all but disappeared in recent years--

Nice compliments, Thank You.
Not what I'm looking for but
nice, just the same.
Let me try it this way.
If there was room for one more song,
What would you put in there?

Sandra: I can always get another cover to you.

Jim, with your gorgeous voice, whatever you record will be outstanding.

couldn't have put it better myself!

eagerly awaiting the new CD & the following CD.

I was playing Troubadour on Tuesday when chaos happened & I still haven't found the cover so it's still sitting in a spare cover!! I really must have a clean up on the weekend (maybe)

Great pile of songs, Jim, and I'm sure you'll do them proud. You might want to look into some of that new Dehacknifying software ...

(Sorry, I couldn't resist).

Yes. I wrote it recently and was hoping to pass it on to any First Nation singers but no luck finding any. So I put it to music myself and hope that the right people will pick up on it.

Jim, is The Highway of Tears a song about the 500 mile stretch of road (Highway 16) where a half dozen people went missing?

I'm open to any suggestions.
I'll go into the studio in a few weeks and lay down the vocal tracks. Take them to the musicians and when we're ready, record them. So I have a couple of weeks to make up my mind on them.

So, despite spending a little more time on Mudcat & setting up the computer than I had intended, I am making progress on the groundwork for the next album.
Most of the songs are basically A Capella with just a little instrumentation here and there and in most cases, not what I have been allowed to perform in recent years.
I'll entertain your suggestions for other songs and arrangements if you have the time to look through this.
Thanks.
Jim
1 The Irish Emigrant (Piano)
2 Skibbereen (Slightly different tune, livelier)
3 The Dawning of the Day (Harp)
4 Macushla (Piano, Fiddle)
5 She Moved Through the Fair (A Capella)
6 The Highway of Tears (A Capella)
7 The Convict of Clonmel (A Capella)
8 Let Me Fish off Cape St. Mary's (Waiting for permission)
9 She's Like the Swallow (Suggestions?)
10 Believe me if all Those Endearing Young Charms (Harp or Guitar)
11 Oft' in the Stilly Night (Harp or Guitar)
12 Down By The Glenside (Suggestions?)
13 The Snowy Breasted Pearl (Suggestions?)
14 Cape Breton Lullaby (Maybe some Fiddle)
15 The Star of Logy Bay (Accordion)

I have a list, twice the size of this one, of similar songs that I'd love to record. If this works out though, I should be able to go back to the studio within a few months of this one.
