That's what I have often said, Dick G- how would/will the GOP feel about the executive powers that will be handed on to the next president- the warrantless taps, instance?

I suspect that if a Democratic administration comes in, some of the GOP stalwarts will immediately come to their senses and say, Oh we can't have that!

The sad thing is that I'm not at all sure that any incoming administration will be willing to sacrifice the new powers. I would have tremendous respect for any White House that immediately disavowed anything that damages the Constitution. I would dearly love to feel proud of an administration.

"We must not have an intelligence gap"... says the talking fascist Bush.

Yet I hear the words spoken at the end of Dr. Stranglove "We must not have a mine shaft gap!"

Hold the cover of Froots and Park Records sign another legend of the scene.......

The Producers of the Mike Harding Show defended Herman Goering's inclusion on the playlist saying, Not to have booked Herman would have been cowardly. The Battle of Britain is acknowledged everywhere as a modern folk classic much loved by all, and few of the festival crowd can claim to have experienced it live. Herman is one of the originals. His place in the tradition is secure - unlike these young buggers.

Ya' know Jacques Brel is also alive and well. What does he have to say?

How would the folks who are comfortable about the new powers that are in the hands of the Executive Branch feel if one of the people on the other side of the political spectrum came into office and assumed those same powers? That, after all, is the real test.

Well, it is a common thing for despots to point out someone else who is committing the same or similar misdeeds as those they are engaged in themselves. It's a good way of misdirecting the public's attention...from something that IS their direct concern to something that is not.

Condeleeza Rice has said that there is too much concentration of power in Moscow, and it could threaten democracy in Russia...

I laughed out loud.

If the powers that be have a case they can get a warrant with no trouble at all.

"I decide who's a Jew"
"I have no conscience"
"At least 12 years of a decent life"
"I want to be called/named Meier"

Now these four Göring quotes could also be the start of four different threads. The first may be put in the mouth of a Rabbi,....

It is also easy to quote a respectable person with some similarity to Bush but that is not the intention.

The intention is to invoke guilt by association which is a lowly method of argumentation for someone who is too lazy or dumb to argue with the facts which in Bush's case should be easy enough.

Wolfgang

Is that right, and someone's booked him for the Cambridge festival next year?

I expect he's on the mainstage, rather just a floorspot in the club tent. These old guys making comebacks always seem to start off with Cambridge.

I bet you won't see him queuing up for a shit, he'll have his own caravan.

When are they going to invite some new acts like me, that's what I want to know?

And an allied government dedicated to denying the Holocaust, and supported by the White House in doing so. That's the Armenian Holocaust of course - as Hitler said "Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?"

If you do a search on "goering" at the Mudcat, you will see he has been quoted many times comparing his words to the shrub et al. IMO, this would have been better put in an existing thread with a better title.

I don't know why the earlier message may have been edited out, but your point is pretty limited. ANY leaders can foment war for reasons later found to be good or bad. The fact that you have a quote from Goering (if indeed you do) seems to be mainly in aid of creating controversy.

Even Hitler could be right if he said "Two plus two is four."

Hermann Goering is long gone. Our current problems are some other folks who are alive and well such as Osama Bin Laden and AhmadirtyJob.

That may have happened because nameless guest postings are verboten now, and a clone may have missed your names at the bottom of the post. FYI

We started this thread a few hours ago and it seems to have disappeared. So, we'll try again.

Here's Bush in the American Protection Act of 2007:

"In August, a bipartisan majority in Congress passed the Protect America Act. This law has helped close a critical intelligence gap, allowing us to collect important foreign intelligence and information about terrorist plots. The problem is the law expires on February 1st -- that's 135 days from today. The threat from al Qaeda is not going to expire in 135 days.

So I call on Congress to make the Protect America Act permanent. The need for action is clear. Director McConnell has warned that unless the FISA reforms in the Act are made permanent, our national security professionals will lose critical tools they need to protect our country. Without these tools, it'll be harder to figure out what our enemies are doing to train, recruit and infiltrate operatives in our country. Without these tools our country will be much more vulnerable to attack.

Unfortunately, some in Congress now want to restrict the tools. These restrictions would impede the flow of information that helps us protect our people. These restrictions would reopen gaps in our intelligence that we had just closed.

In addition to making the Protection [sic] America Act permanent, I urge Congress to take up other critical proposals included in the comprehensive FISA reform my administration submitted last April. It's particularly important for Congress to provide meaningful liability protection to those companies now facing multi-billion dollar lawsuits only because they are believed to have assisted in efforts to defend our nation following the 9/11 attacks. Additionally, without this protection, state secrets could be revealed in connection with those lawsuits -- and our ability to protect our people would be weakened.

At stake in this debate is more than a piece of legislation. The decisions Congress makes will directly affect our ability to save American lives. I look forward to working with Congress to enact this legislation as quickly as possible, so that our intelligence officials will continue to have the tools they need to keep the American people safe. Thank you.

Here's Hermann Goering at the Nuremburg Trials following World War II:
""Why of course the people don't want war ...But after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship ...Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger."
