Subject: RE: BS: Be somewhat afraid From: JohnInKansas Date: 31 Oct 07 - 01:45 AM For comparison - authoritative(?) data for ONE YEAR: CDC: Causes for Deaths 2004 Number of deaths for leading causes of death Heart disease: 652,486 Cancer: 553,888 Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 150,074 Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 121,987 Accidents (unintentional injuries): 112,012 Diabetes: 73,138 Alzheimer's disease: 65,965 Influenza/Pneumonia: 59,664 Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 42,480 Septicemia: 33,373 More recent information suggests significant changes: e.g. a massive increase from resistant infections, which would likely fall in the "Septicemia" category. Subject: RE: BS: Be somewhat afraid From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 30 Oct 07 - 10:43 PM Something wrong here, I think. For example, after accidents the main cause of death for younger, adult women is homicide. A very sad statistic! (I saw it in a pamphlet from the life insurance industry which I processed at a public library.) |

Subject: RE: BS: Be somewhat afraid From: dick greenhaus Date: 30 Oct 07 - 06:21 PM The data was sent to me unsourced. Skimming it, though, the numbers seem roughly reasonable--though I would have expected murder to rank up there. |

Subject: RE: BS: Be somewhat afraid From: Little Hawk Date: 30 Oct 07 - 06:04 PM It's not. Chongo shot quite a number of people (and also some other apes) intentionally over that same 10-year period. In his defence, however, he had good reason to. They were trying to kill him. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Be somewhat afraid From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 30 Oct 07 - 06:01 PM It looks from those figures as if during that ten year period no one in the States ever got shot intentionally, except by police officers. Are you quite sure that's correct? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Be somewhat afraid From: Little Hawk Date: 30 Oct 07 - 05:42 PM It should be noted, however, that the above statistics are quite high when you factor in the quite small number of chimps involved nationwide in the above incidents! My advice? Don't mention poop-throwing around a chimp, and never, never call him a "monkey"! |

Subject: RE: BS: Be somewhat afraid From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 30 Oct 07 - 03:59 PM Dick, interesting statistics; what is the source of these numbers? Also, it would be interesting to know why this particular eleven year period was chosen, as opposed to, say, 1990-2000. Also, what does a category entail? For instance 'walking down the street': does this mean just keeling over whilst walking, or perhaps being shot in a drive-by while walking. If so shot, might that be more aptly placed under accidental gunshot (if the deceased was not the intended target), or under terrorism (whether or not the intended victim of the gunshot)? So much inquiring minds want to know. |
