These days it's cheap enough to add an external hard drive big enough for all your music plus extra for the future... compressing files a little bit more only puts off the inevitable for a little bit longer!!

Another thing to consider - files in a compressed format such as MP3 or WMA deteriorate when you convert them to another compressed format.

Thanks to everyone for those suggestions. Just as soon as the turkey and Christmas pudding have settled down, I'll decide which one best suits me.

gnomad

The old version allows you to do mp3 things. I have the newer one as well and on that the mp3 functionality runs out and you need to purchase it. The older one lets you do more without trialling out.

Super is super though because it offers so many more options that I tend to use it for things as diverse as bulk changing of files, changing between video formats and capturing and recording streaming video and sound etc etc etc

dbpoweramp should do the job. Like Nick_ I have an old version which I got free on one of those magazine discs, it works very well and there are codecs available (free) for all sorts of obscure file types if you need them.

The paid-for version appears to cost $18.00, and offers more features, but I haven't needed them. To find the free version follow the links to registration, then version differences.

If not the above try Super but only download it from that site. Converts from and to most things. Drag and drop into window and out they come

I think that dbpoweramp converter will do it too but I have an old version which does more than the current one

I'm looking to convert a large number of audio files from MP3 to WMA, the object being to save space. The files are on hard disk and Windows Media Player seems able to do it but only with files on CDR.

Does anybody know of any cheap or better still free software which will facilitate the conversion of MP3 files to WMA while on hard disk ?

Many hopeful thanks.
