...contrary to what our masters may say, a lot of the rank and file would prefer to see their taxes spent on domestic matters, rather than being poured into a futile attempt to control another country.

Used to be, if you had bad economic conditions, you started a war - or got into an ongoing one - to pick up the economy.

Now we have a war and a recession at the same time.

Is this a new first?

Peter

Tillerman - I now live in the USA and quite often hear the same complaint about the financial cost of the war here. Seems that, contrary to what our masters may say, a lot of the rank and file would prefer to see their taxes spent on domestic matters, rather than being poured into a futile attempt to control another country.

Not another Little Englander! The place is being overrun with Disgusted of Suburbia.

"Few countries allow an open door policy to eastern europeans" - they are in the European Union. We can go there, they can come here.

Why this sudden upsurge in mean- minded whinging? Is it a result of the collapse of the feelgood factor with the housing market?

I really can´t understand the logic behind our government here in the UK.
Most european countries keep their noses out of other peoples affairs and tend to look after the needs of their own people. Britain seems to run after America like a dog on a lead, yes I can understand America wishing to flex muscle in other countries (I don´t agree with this) but Britain is a small nation (Welsh and Scottish don´t call the shots) it´s really just England.

Why close schools and hospitals and tell us we can´t afford improved public transport or build 30,000 much needed new public housing developments, yet spend billions each year sticking their noses into middle eastern countries.

We are a small island nation and don´t have the means to rub shoulders with the big boys. Few countries allow an open door policy to eastern europeans, I can´t remember the last time I paid for petrol or food and spoke to someone I could understand.

Here in Manchester we need public money spent on housing, public services, health and education. We are told the money isn´t there.

It´s there for bloody weapons and military camps in countries that barely know we exist !
