i met eddie in may last year and we discovered that we shared the same faith. we arranged to meet up at the district assembly and i enjoyed seeing him again and meeting his mother. i'm glad to have known such a lovely man and my thoughts are with him and his family at this tragic time.

As a family we have known Edward for many years, and have had many a happy meal with his family at their house and ours.
One of the most placid loving people we have ever met.   He always saw good in people and genuinly cared for them.

It is hard to believe he has gone. Our thoughts are with his family.

We knew Edward from going to the Shoddy Doggie Folk Club in Dewsbury and Cleckheaton Folk Festival and enjoyed many a night at the folk club in his company where he was always very appreciative of everyone's efforts and all there enjoyed his many self penned songs, his guitar playing and presentation of traditional songs in his own inimitable style.

He will be missed by those who knew him and in particular the people in the folk music world that he was part of.

We are,unfortunately, not able to attend the funeral as we would have liked to do to show our respect for the untimely passing of a lovely man, however, we would like to say to Edward's family that we are thinking of you at this very difficult time.

Dear all,

It is so lovely to see your kind comments about our dad/husband. We are still in shock and cannot believe he has gone.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your kind words and for those who have given us emotional support during this difficult time.

He certainly was a well-known and well-loved man.

For those who may wish to know when the funeral will take place, it is due to be held on Thursday 27th March 2008 at 2:00 pm at the Kingdom Hall, Lees Hall Road, Thornhill Lees, Dewsbury, followed by burial at Dewsbury Cemetery at 3:00 pm.

All are welcome.

Fund to honour life of Edward

SHOP workers are raising money for a popular Dewsbury road sweeper who was found dead at his home.
Edward Thorpe, 58, known as Eddie, was found with head injuries in Howard Street, Batley Carr, on February 21.

Richard Edward Thorpe, 25, has appeared in court charged with murder.

Well-wishers are hoping to raise enough money to honour his memory with a bench or plaque, which could be put in Market Place.

Sandra Quayle, manager of Quality Save in Market Place, where donations can be taken, said Mr Thorpe was a gentleman and well-liked.

"He was such a lovely person," she said.

Mr Thorpe's friend Steve Beveridge, of Westtown, started the fund by donating £20.

His colleagues at Kirklees are also having a collection in his memory.

Edward was such a loving gentleman, I have known him since birth (1974). My love goes to all his family especially Pauline and Melissa.

During the course of my work for Kirklees Council I met Edward when he worked in Batley. I would visit the Town Hall and he would be having his break. The gentlest, nicest man you could ever wish to meet. So sad his life should end so tragically.

The estimable Shantyfreak has voiced my thoughts entirely. I too knew Eddie through the Shoddy D, and he was such a lovely guy, gentle but strong, genial and thoroughly genuine, with not an ounce of malice in his generous soul. I too cherish memories of his fine photos which provided indelible mementos of notable club nights. Yes, Eddie will be sorely missed. RIP, friend.

Anyone who met Edward Thorpe could be forgiven for thinking they had just met an angel, he was such a lovely man. I for one will miss him very much. Indeed the Festival will not be the same without Eddy snapping pictures for us. I know that all the committee and board members and anyone who had anything to do with Cleckheaton Folk Festival will join me in saying rest in peace Eddy. We will miss your music your fabulous photos and your sunny disposition.

I am happy to say that Eddy was a friend and I for one will miss his cheerful smiling face and our many conversations going home from the club on an evening. It is hard to believe that this gentle soul is gone and harder still to comprehend the manner of his passing.
Those of us who knew him will know of his strong faith and how much he took comfort in it and we can do the same.

On behalf of us all from the old Shoddy, from the Cleckheaton Festival committee and his many friends in the folk world I would like to say we are richer for having known him and that he will leave a space in our lives. We will miss his presence, his pictures and his music.

Edward was a lovely lovely bloke and I am in tears as I type this

he was in deed a stalwart of the Shoddy Doggie in Dewsbury and helped make the Shoddy one of the friendliest clubs I have known

Sylvia Needham here, with a message that I would really rather not be leaving.

Edward Thorpe was found dead at his home in Dewsbury at 6.30 a.m. on Thursday 21st February.

Most of you didn't know him, those who did know he was a lovely, kind, gentle man. He played the guitar and wrote many songs - some funny, some sad and some about the injustice that the working man still suffers. He was a regular at the Bag O'Shoddy/Shoddy Doggie folk club in Dewsbury (now closed), being the designated photographer (another of his hobbies - he took the photographs at my niece's wedding). Edward also went to Cleckheaton Folk Festival every year.

As the club he went to regularly is now closed, meant that the news about his death has filtered out slowly, and, unfortunately, the tragedy doesn't end there. Edward was murdered, it would appear, by his 25 year old son, Richard, who suffers with mental problems.

As soon as I have any news about Edward's funeral, I will post it here.
