Try looking at www.blazeaudio.com -they are a US company who do lots of downloadable audio stuff - I bought a wave editor for around £12.50 (Soundforge costs around £600)when dollars converted into pounds -I know they do a sound cleaning program - might be worth your browsing around their site

Thanks, guys. I do have a copy of Goldwave somewhere, but a rummage didn't find it.
Audacity seems to be good for a tyro, but a bit limited.

Dunno about Audacity, but with Goldwave you just highlight the tiny whisper, and raise the volume of that section. Or, you can fool around with compression/expansion.

Sometimes I find that Goldwave will do more than Audacity. The trial version does all functions but the number of usages is restricted. I don't find it as simple to use as Audacity though.

I'm trying to work on a couple of tape-recordings of Cyril for Rosemary Tawney and his website. The tape has deteriorated badly.
Rosemary particularly wants the patter, as obviously she has the actual music from records.

Specifically, the volume varies from a tiny whisper to normal volume, and the audience respose is even louder.
What I need is to get a more even volume and then remove the tape hiss from the (what was once) quieter passages.

I've been trying with Audacity, but can't get much joy there, and I don't want to throw money at the job, either. Does anyone know of a shareware or freeware program that would help?
Chris.
