Subject: RE: BS: EU hates bagpipes From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 22 Apr 08 - 09:02 PM There is a Rock Weekend Festiveal that for 10 years pretended to be a 'Gospel Music Festival' - I had a previous thread about this last year (Noise in the scale of C!). The relevant Qld Law says 'max 60 dB(A)' whereas they pump out about 120-130 dB(C) - which (of course!) reads as 60dB(A) on the 'offical meter'... My attempt to discuss the matter resulted in 'offical Govt correspondence' which popinted out that "the dB(A) scale measured sounds across the whole spectrum of music and not just music in the musical scale of C" ..... AAGHHHHH!!!!! |

Subject: RE: BS: EU hates bagpipes From: kendall Date: 22 Apr 08 - 01:48 PM I'd rather hear the highland pipes at 85 d than any rock band at 120 d. Come to think of it, I don't want to hear a rock band at ANY d. |

Subject: RE: BS: EU hates bagpipes From: Wolfgang Date: 22 Apr 08 - 11:39 AM The rules cap weekly average noise exposure at 85 decibels (at the workplace) Seems to me like a very good idea. More than 85 db (unprotected) average during an eight hour shift will increase the threshold for hearing to a level that makes social interaction (talking in a pub, listening to music etc.) very difficult or impossible at the end of a decades-long exposure. If Britain had not yet a law about restricting the noise at the workplace she should be glad to be forced to do the sensible. At the end of a lecture on workplace safety, I always list (tongue in cheek) the violations of workplace safety regulations by a rock band (to the picture of a very young Mr. Jagger): - they work on a high place (stage) without the necessary handrails - extender cables are lying around - they work close to open electricity without the necessary danger labels - they have no proper workplace safety training - they work in a crowded place without clients being prevented from unsolicited physical contact - it is too hot and too loud without protection - they work under glare without sufficient protection for the eyes etc. Well, that's tongue in cheek, but the TIMES seems to be serious and is taken serious by people from the back of the woods. If you read the law you'll see easily several reasons why piping is not affected by workplace safety regulations. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: BS: EU hates bagpipes From: Zen Date: 22 Apr 08 - 07:29 AM This strikes me more as an anti-EU piece rather than talking about an attempt to ban bagpipes of any kind which I hardly think is likely to happen (virtually every country in Europe has some local form of bagpipes). The legislation is primarily aimed at controlling workplace noise which is a serious problem, especially where workers are exposed to elevated levels of noise for extended periods. The piece asserts that "pipers must adhere to strict volume limits..." but having just looked through the legislation and its guidance I cannot see any mention of pipers or bagpipes at all. Zen |
