Amen to the comments about Bill Monroe. I had the great honor to hear Bill and his band at Riverfront Plaza in Louisville in 1974. His performances still ring with the soul and energy he put into them. His innovations in the field of folk, bluegrass, country and popular music are not really appreciated by the millions of today's fans, though. He has been a major influence on everyone from Elvis Presley to Dwight Yoakam to the Grateful Dead. The LP Bean Blossom shows the power of what he and The Bluegrass Boys could do live.

One objection. The link to A Beautiful Life attributes the song to Bill Monroe. Absolutely, positively incorrect! It was written by William M. Golden, copyright 1918. I have tried to do a bit of research into Mr. Golden's background, but turned up just about zero. He also wrote Where The Soul Of Man Never Dies (Canaan's Land).

My own personal favorite version is that of the Country Gentlemen.

Just got a new Doyle Lawson CD with this on it. Sheeoot! I've got more gospel albums than any ten preachers! How come I'm still an agnostic? (Please DON'T answer that, it rhetorical)

Well, just great........I get back here with info and not only is it already posted, but Rick has taken my line re: Bill Monroe. But let me add this.........

Not only should you here Bill Monroe do this, but anyone who has any interest in American folk music should be given a mandatory listening sampler of 20 or 30 Bill Monroe songs. He added so much...from different instrument groupings and sounds, different styles on each instrument, different harmonies........No way you can talk American music without a background course in Bill Monroe.

The first song that came into my mind was Angel Band (click here). Not the same, but there is a similarity. Can you remember any more of the song?

I'm trying to find an old fieldhands'song that starts "Life's evening sun is sinking low". It has great sentimental value for my girlfriend as her father taught it to her when she was a child. She has never heard it recorded and would like to find if anyone has recorded it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This request was triggered when she read Johnny Cash mention it as a song sung in the cotton fields when he was a boy.
