"but he indulges in plenty of piacy as well"

You mean 'piety'? That maketh him a Religious Pirate surely?

I remember a TV programme from the 1950s called " The Buccaneers ", and the title song went something like-

"let's go a-roving,a-roving across the ocean,
       Let's go a-roving and join the Buccaneers " ...

It was crap, but hey !! What else was there in those days, apart from Phil Silvers ??

Piracy songs: don't forget the classic "Flying Cloud". The slaving section of the song is perhaps the most notable, but he indulges in plenty of piacy as well.

Still my favorite image of a salty old seadog is Captain Haddock.

What's the French for "Arrgh"?

Definitely not traditional, but I remember as a child a TV series about pirates, the sig tune of which went something like:

A life on the ocean wave will be
The only life for you and me.
We'll sail across the mighty sea
Forever.

And if we find that danger's near
We'll whistle the tune 'The Buccaneer'
And we will face the enemy
Together.

Where are your Buccaneers?

Under my Buccan hat!

Send me a pm if you want the rest of the joke, if you haven't heard it before. Don't forget Polly on the Shore.

Okay, I don't know my alphabet yet, but I plan to as soon as I master the "F"s. It is, of course, LJS. Or maybe he collected, long, Georgian silver. What the heck do I know?

I prefer the elegant eloquence of P.G. Wodehouse, as in

'I say, I seem to have sent my motor car smashing into your roses. Mind giving me a hand extricating it?"

'R'

You may be correct, Steve, as I have heard of neither Walter Gabriel nor the Archers. I do know that Newton was LGS in the 1950 version of Treasure Island.

Sorry, however you spell it the Aaaargh was invented by Walter Gabriel of the Archers.

Kelly the Pirate. Bold Princess Royal. There are lots of songs about privateers. Officially they were pirates if you fell foul of them.

COme to think of it, aside from Andrew Barton (Henry Martin) and Ward and the Rainbow, there aren't a helluva lot of traditional pirate songs.

I think Aaaarrgh, was invented by Robert Newton when he essayed Long John Silver or Blackbeard the Pirate (he had a delicious death scene as the latter.)
