Ebbie I thought I was a skeptic but I think I will need to mail my trophy collection to you.

Yes, I admit that the thought occurred to me on the first reading, and so did the "running from sniper fire" incident come to mind.

But come on, we can't give voice to that until there is something to go on. Can we? . . . . Can we? No, I don't think so . . . .

The full quote to which Ebbie refers ia from a Washington Post article. Here's the context:

Arriving across the border [from Rwanda in 1994] in Goma, in what is now Congo, McCain found cholera victims stacked beside the road "like highway barriers." "I remember having to step over the decomposing body of an infant, covered with white powder, lime I guess, to get into one building." The field hospital covered four acres. McCain's team provided primary care for sick and frightened refugees, many of them suffering from dehydration. For nearly a month, McCain organized deliveries of food and water for the operation, collecting supplies at the Goma airport.

Still not an explanation why the body was not moved, but when there's that much death (and that many bodies), I imagine that one becomes hardened to the sight of it and saves one's respect for the living. Also, when one is visiting in another country, I'd think it would be presumptuous to assume that another culture would have the same ideas/beliefs about "respecting the dead" that one holds in one's own country.

I've gotta say this (Well, actually, I don't have to, but I wanna), does anyone else find one phrase that Ms.McCain used just a trifle unbelievable? She said that she "remembers stepping over the decomposing body of a child".

I cannot picture that. Wartime, poverty, violence all around- none of that validates that. Why would not the body of a child have been picked up? Why would a person step over it? Why would not a person say something like: Hey! Somebody show a little respect here!

No, bluegrass socks. (They needed a third sock for the 3-part harmonies, though)

Re SFSPTheatre: The guy's dialogue is quite clever. I watched their version of MacBeth. Loved the part where Lady MacB (a.k.a. "Mrs. The Scottish Play") says "Out, out, damn spot" and MacB corrects her Scottish accent so that she says "Oot, oot, damn spoot!"

Yes, I've spent endless minutes with them. Had them book marked for quite awhile with no one to share them with, so you can imagine how pleased I was when the opportunity presented itself here.

My "lead" to them was through the Al Green one, which I linked to first. I really enjoy that one too.

As to the bluegrass sock puppet performance, well. It certainly is on topic for a folk music forum, now isn't it?

BTW, I read the op-ed piece by Michael "Head up Bush's Butt" Gerson and would like to nominate Cindy McCain as "Woman of the Century" and have written the Pope to see what it would take to get her sainted...

Last time I checked, the Boston Globe qualified as "a major 'news' outlet" Major Lansing, Sir.

There is no shortage of folks around here who, if they aren't engaged in sockpuppetry, are regularly engaged in other internet dysfuctions such as trolling, flamebaiting, and kickin' the dog and slappin' the bitch sorts of mischief, particularly in the political threads.

It is also relatively easy to predict who these people are, by looking at who it is keeps initiating these sorts of threads over and over and over.

Click on the name 'Bobert' and it is pretty quick and easy to tell this is a person with a penchant for starting this sort of flamebait trollery thread, to trip the triggers of the resident Republicans.

And what good does that sort of divisive, hateful behavior serve in a folk music forum?

Cheap entertainment for some, at the expense of some others.

It's a shame that Ex-presidential-candidate-to-be Bobert little joke has been taken so seriously and ponderously by our visiting/resident conservatives*** AND *** so seriously and iconicly by our resident liberals.
It was a small joke. If I had a gallon of gas for every lame Bill/ Hillery Clinton joke that my conservative pals have sent me over the past 16 or so years, there would be plenty to burn for centuries. The same goes for George Bush jokes/cartoons that get lauded here as if they explore new fields of analytical profundity. Most humor of both camps seem to have the subtlety of, ...of, ...of something that is not subtle.
Where's my Budweiser?

I posted the Karl Rove thing to show what real hate mongering looked like. Folks here aren't trying to influence any one Mr. WileyC (Coyote). It like a few friends joking around the water cooler. But you know that. You obviously aren't expressing real concerns. You are trying to bully Bobert into thinking twice before he posts again. Let me tell you something. It ain't gonna happen. It should not happen.

Here's another thing. Interesting post about Ron Paul. It deserves its own thread.

No, wait! Is it just possible that your appearance on this thread is not actually your first venture onto Mudcat? Could you possibly be (Oh! Perish the thought!) a member of the dreaded Sockpuppet clan? Naw! Couldn't be! Sockpuppets are again' the rules here, aren't they?

Nah, not angry. Just annoyed as f**k sometimes at the never-ending circularity of partisan fighting, whining, and sniping at one another.

Now, if we'd like to talk something amusing at Republicans' expense that doesn't involve any of the above, how about the entertainment value of the brewing Ron Paul Counter Convention? Divided they fall?

This is a story just beginning to brew (haha), from the Boston Globe:

Ron Paul, the iconclastic former Republican presidential hopeful, announced today that he will hold a rally at the Target Center in Minneapolis on Sept. 2, as the GOP holds its convention across the river in St. Paul.

His supporters hoped to get him a speaking role at the GOP convention, but that does not appear likely. So instead he is planning the counter-convention, and has made entreaties with Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr. Paul was the Libertarian candidate in 1988.

Paul plans "grassroots and leadership training events" on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, in addition to the all-day Target Center event with speakers including Grover Norquist, Tucker Carlson, Gov. Gary Johnson, Barry Goldwater Jr. and Bruce Fein

Paul's campaign said there has been enough interest in the "Rally for the Republic" to move it from the smaller Williams Arena to the 18,000-seat Target Center.

"The Rally for the Republic will send a powerful, positive message to the Republican Party that there is an army of grassroots activists across the country ready to work with them if steer back to their traditions of limited government and personal liberty," spokesman Jesse Benton said in a statement.

The Texas congressman, who opposes the Iraq war and is a libertarian on economic issues, drew an avid following during the Republican primaries. He won 1.2 million votes and raised nearly $35 million. His campaign said the Campaign for Liberty, formed June 16 when he ended his presidential bid, has attracted over 71,000 members.

The problem I have with all these Obama lovers who keep saying they are for Obama because he represents a change in how politics and the game is conducted, is they are two faced hypocrites.

On the one hand, they complain about the dirty tricks and tactics of Karl Rove, et al, but then they turn around and do the exact same thing themselves.

Political opponents aren't "our enemies". They are simply political opponents.

Unless, of course, hate is one of your main values, which it does seem to be for many who post in this forum.

Yup, Bruce, Cindy Lou was/is quite a humanitarian. It doesn't erase the personality quirk that caused her to have an affair with a married man who was a noted philanderer but, hey, she was 25 at the time. More troubling is her addiction to painkillers 10 years later that caused her to engage in criminal behavior: stealing drugs from her own medical charity and forging prescriptions. I haven't found any info that says whether she still struggles with addiction problems or whether they're not an issue for her anymore.

Snopes has a short bio with the good and the bad (but, of course, there ain't no ugly!): Snopes.com -- Cindy McCain

Washington Post:

A Quiet Humanitarian
By Michael Gerson
Wednesday, July 23, 2008; Page A15

KIGALI, Rwanda -- Cindy McCain's first visit to this country, in 1994, was during the high season of roadblocks and machetes and shallow graves.

Following a call for help from Doctors Without Borders, McCain had assembled a medical team with the intention of setting up a mobile hospital in Rwanda. Arriving by private plane in mid-April, a couple of weeks into the massacres, she realized that the chaos made deploying her team impossible. At the airport, she paid for the use of a truck and set out for Goma in then-Zaire, where hundreds of thousands of refugees were also headed.

"I never saw anyone harmed," McCain recalls, "but I saw the bodies along the roadside." Checkpoints were manned by 12- and 13-year-olds with AK-47s. "The kids were drinking -- bottles of Guinness, I remember. They would point their guns at you. They wanted money. We paid." Along the way, she picked up several abandoned young people, later turned over to the care of an Irish charity.

"You could see the chaos, hear the shots, hear the screaming. You could smell it." What, I asked her, could you smell? "The smell of death," she replied.

Arriving across the border in Goma, in what is now Congo, McCain found cholera victims stacked beside the road "like highway barriers." "I remember having to step over the decomposing body of an infant, covered with white powder, lime I guess, to get into one building." The field hospital covered four acres. McCain's team provided primary care for sick and frightened refugees, many of them suffering from dehydration. For nearly a month, McCain organized deliveries of food and water for the operation, collecting supplies at the Goma airport.

"I have never seen anything like it before," she says, "and never since. . . . When I came home, I couldn't put it into words for my husband."

The rushing return of these memories came on Cindy McCain's first visit to Rwanda since the genocide. In the shadow of Barack Obama's world tour, McCain joined a bipartisan delegation -- including former Senate majority leaders Bill Frist and Tom Daschle -- organized by the ONE Campaign, a group that advocates for the fight against global poverty and disease. (I am also involved in the efforts of ONE.)

McCain came back to a very different Rwanda -- peaceful, well governed, and making, with American help, some of the most rapid progress in the history of public health. "What has struck me," says McCain, "is that most people are reconciling. A woman I met was gang-raped [during the genocide], her throat was slit, she lost her whole family, but was willing to forgive. The reason this will be a successful country is the women -- some of the strongest, most inspiring women I have ever met."

Given her history of humanitarianism, these adjectives might be associated with McCain herself. The election of her husband would also bring to the White House an adventurous, traveled, intriguingly fearless first lady. Over the years, McCain has taken medical services to a Sandinista stronghold after Nicaragua's civil war; set up a mobile hospital near Kuwait City while the oil wells still burned from the Persian Gulf War; helped in Bangladesh after a cyclone. And while in that country in 1991 she found her daughter Bridget in an orphanage -- "She really picked me," McCain insists. Sometimes the desire to save every child is properly concentrated on a single child.

Like most of Cindy McCain's life, these stories are generally hidden behind a wall of well-tailored reticence. She values the privacy of her family and resents the intrusiveness of the media. None of her relief work has been done for political consumption or Washington prominence. On the contrary, it has been an alternative life to the culture of the capital -- the rejection of the normal progress of a senator's wife. "It is not about me -- it never has been. I felt it was important -- that I had to do it. I never took government money. It was my own, and I am not ashamed of it."

But all this would have political consequences in a McCain administration. Even if a first lady is not intrusively political, the whole White House responds to her priorities. Cindy McCain has had decades of personal contact with the suffering of the developing world. And in some future crisis or genocide, it might matter greatly to have a first lady who knows the smell of death.

*Grmppph#@$&%bble* Cindy McCain is closer to a Stepford Wife than a Replicant -- she's a replacement for John's first model (literally), Carol, whose body was disfigured in a horrible traffic accident while John was a POW. She even lost several inches in height due her injuries. When John came home and found that his trophy wife was no longer a trophy, he began cheating on her, searching for and eventually finding a younger, slimmer, blonder, richer, undamaged version. He left the first one to endure her physical pain and permanent disability and ongoing medical treatment and emotional anguish alone.

I first heard this story a couple of months ago on a Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) talk radio station, because Carol McCain grew up there. The radio host interviewed the doctor who had operated on her on Christmas Eve into Christmas Day 1969 -- a story I found amazing because of her survival after being thrown from her car through the windshield into the snow and lying there (for an ambiguously long time) with severe injuries before being found and treated.

Here are a couple of articles about Carol's ordeal:

The wife John McCain left behind
St. Petersburg Times article

It makes my blood boil whenever I hear McCain's political commercials brag about his selflessness and his moral character. There are plenty of other stories about McCain's self-serving ways, but this one beats all the rest.

Attacking the women again I see, Bobert.

Why do you have to make a monster out of everyone you don't like, hmmmm?

Why can't you just disagree with their policies, and allow everyone to be human?

Cream foundations offer great coverage but tend to emphasize lines and wrinkles. She should stick with a tinted moisturizer or an easily blended liquid base. A mineral foundation powder would give her a more healthy, even glow. She should stay away glitter and heavy shimmers in her eye shadows, and should stick to matte colors and possibly a frosted shadow. She's not always careful to smudge the liner into the lash line as she should.

I have been trying to avoid ...even to myself... making Mrs. McCain an issue. She is so ummmm..."overdone" and plastic-looking most of the time, that I can only attribute it to trying to be worthy of her money. I HAVE heard her speak a couple of times where she sounded almost human though, so I guess I'll just avoid thinking about her most of the time........except when I have this vision of her giving media tours of the White House after redecorating it.
