Subject: BS: Thought for the Day - Sept 3 From: Peter T. Date: 03 Sep 08 - 11:25 AM Everyone seems to be back at work after Labour Day. In a clearing of the woods, I come upon two downy woodpeckers hard at it. Well, one of them is hard at it. He (it is a he, with a red spot on his head) is working on a dead log, and attacks it sideways, for all the world like someone cutting wedges in a tree, or someone sharpening a pencil with a knife -- first one side, and then the other, bark flying everywere. He is a pleasure to watch in the September sun (watching others work is pretty much always a pleasure). His buddy I am not so sure of. He stomps around on the log a bit, flits up to a tree, comes back, does a little log bashing, thinks better of it, walks over to check on his buddy, gets in the way a bit, flits up to a tree again. Some things don't change on any work team: there's a worker guy, and then there's the "I'm getting to work, really I am," guy. But since I am not part of their work team, I am fond of them both, and wish them both well in their appointed task. |
