Jim, I'm in Canada. I get a page with a few 'details,' but no way of getting to the text.
I looked around in Google Books; some I could get to OK, others just gave me a 'details' page.

Q: Do you mean my link, to the libretto? It works fine for me, and takes me directly to the page in the book that contains the lyrics I copied. No, I don't think you have to join anything, but it might depend on what country you're in. Google attempts to make these texts available only in those countries where it determines the works are no longer under copyright, although I think they don't always do this correctly. We have found instances where certain books are viewable by users in the USA but not in the UK.

Followed the link but couldn't figure out how to open. Must one join?

Jim,
Thank you so much. English & Italian lyrics. You've made my month! The song is so stirring with just the melody, but your efforts will make it even more meaningful.

Google Book Search. Can you elaborate?

Subject: Lyr Add: STUDENTI!—UDITE, O VOI
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 15 Sep 08 - 07:06 AM

Found with Google Book Search:

Germania: A Lyrical Drama in a Prologue, Two Scenes and Epilogue. Italian libretto by Luigi Illica, with an English prose translation by Claude Aveling. Music by Alberto Franchetti. New York: Boosey & Co., 1907.

Studenti!—Udite, o voi, antichi e novi amici!
Tergete queste lacrime! Tergete il vostro pianto!
Chi muore per la patria, non muore! È eterno! È santo!
Eterni son gli eroi! Erran l'anime ultrici!
"Egli morì da eroe! Morì gloriosamente.
"Laggiù, a Tubinga, grave si accese una contese.
"Ci disser: genti ignave! Ei rintuzzò l'offesa
"e fu morte di gloria! Fu morte di studente!
"Per lui l'ire disparvero! Non più diversa scola,
"idee diverse, studî, dogmi e sofismi in guerra.
"Una sola è Germania! A tutti una sol terra!
"Un solo idioma e un'anima sola e una patria sola!"
E quella mesta tomba che a un morto si schiudea
fatta gloriosa culla dava vita a un'idea!
Là la vittoria o il Nulla! La patria là nascea!
Noi là giurammo il Tugendbund! Là è nata l'Epopea!

Students! Hear, friends, old and new!
Dry these tears and cease this weeping!
Who dies for country never dies! He is eternal, sanctified!
Heroes live forever! The souls of endless ages!
He died as heroes should—a glorious death.
There, at Tubinga, the flame of strife was kindled.
They called us cowards; he gave them back their lie
And died with honor, as a student should!
'Twas he that stayed dissension; away with contentious doctrines,
And schemes, plans, dogmas or sophistries in war.
But One is Germany! But one nation we!
One language, one heart, one fatherland!
This mournful grave that opened for the dead
Is now the honored cradle of a new ideal!
There lay Victory or Nothingness! There was the Fatherland born!
There did we swear to the League! There sprang into life our Epic!

Thanks for taking an interest. I don't have the Italian lyrics, or I'd translate them word for word into bumbling English. You can listen to snippets of the song if you enter Jose Cura along with Studenti, udite in any search engine. It's quite a beautiful Wagnerian sounding tune. I'm surprised there's so little information on it.

Hmmmm. Doesn't sound German - but "Gaudeamus Igitur" is usually identified as a German drinking song; and "Kyrie Eleison" as an integral part of the Latin Mass....
I'll keep looking for it. I think I've seen it somewhere. From what I've found so far, apparently it was sung by Enrico Caruso in 1902, from Act 1 of the opera Germania, by Franchetti.
There's a YouTube recording here (click).
Any chance you can post the Italian text?
-Joe-

I've searched Yahoo, and Google for more information on this song. It always leads me to the album by Jose Cura which I have, and which got me interested in trying to find the english lyrics. Has anyone heard of this?
