Good heavens, Bee-Dub. I thought you knew better'n that! Asking a preacher who buys a defunct drive-in to preach against war, starvation, and social injustices is like asking most politicians to refuse a bribe.

I also heard the film burning story on NPR. It caught my interest because it happened in Jacksonville, Florida, where I'm originally from. The films were in a storage cabinet in the snack bar of a defunct drive-in theater the church had recently bought. The theater, known as the Playtime Drive-In, featured X-rated films during parts of the '70s and '80s.

I guess that if the church bought the property, the films were theirs to do whatever that wanted with. But there's a fine line between making a moral statement by destroying something one has an unquestioned right to destroy and imposing ones's morality by destroying that which belongs to others. I would have liked for the interviewer to have given the minister a chance to show whether or not he understands the distinction.

I would also like to know whether he attacks the real evils of the world (war, starvation, disease, social injustice) with the same zeal with which he attacks the "evil" of pornography.

Having said that, Playing card collectors might be a better way to go.

'comic books' may in this case mean "8 page bibles". the little stapled porn comics of the 30s & 40s...and maybe into the 50s.

They often featured parodies of well known comic strips. Ham Fisher, who drew Joe Palooka, was found to have drawn some using Al Capp's L'il Abner characters, which kinda got him ostracized.

There were so many of these that they are not really rare.....the cards 'might' have a small value if one found the right collector....but with porn so readily available today, collecting is not what it once was.

Maybe not, but popeye in porn and a detective, too? Those comic books may be worth a lot! THIS GUY might have some info on them. Or, maybe theyaren't that pricey. I just found this site where one can download one of the popeye ones: click here. But, then again, nothing like the real deal to hold in one's hands!:-)

Amazon lets you list stuff indefinitely these days. eBay lets you list for a month at a time, but it isn't an auction, you have to name your price. That's the difficult part, figuring out what the market will bare bear.

I heard that story about the films being burned. Personally, I think the interviewer could have put a little more heat on the guy. He was very pleased with himself, he wouldn't understand why anyone would think burning X-rated films would be immoral in itself unless she made the point, and she barely made a half-hearted attempt at that. So we'll never actually know if those films had any "redeeming features" or better yet, early performances by now-famous people (!) since they scorched them.

Someone is selling 15 minute films of Vintage Erotica at Amazon. I think if you do a search using "erotica' instead of "porn" you might have more luck in finding reputable places to sell them. Or, as Rapaire said, "Mudcat auction?":-)

Small world. I just heard a piece on NPR's All Things Considered about a church that bought an old building to fix over into their new church building. They were worried, though, because the building had been a porn shop.

When they took possession, in the back room they found case after case of porn films, and maybe they said other porn items too, but I don't remember.

What to do? What to do?

Sell them on e-bay? They gave that one short shrift.

Toss them in a dumpster? Someone might find them and use them, and they would be part of that chain of custody.

Okay, what to do? Burn them!

They had a big public ceremony for the purpose of purifying the wicked building.   Since they were going to be burning stuff, they asked the fire department to send a hose truck for safety. Since they were going to have the hose truck, they said prayers over the water, blessed it, so it would be "holy water". The firemen hosed down the entire property, "cleansing it" symbolically. Then they unspooled all the porn films, for show and symbolic purposes, and touched it off, and had a fine bonfire!   Everyone had a good time, I gather.

If I have erred in any details, it's a goof, not purposeful.

I would advise going to Scroogle (NOT Google) and doing some anonymous searching on relevant terms

EBay is not a good place to sell niche antiquarian stuff - doesn't let you run the listing for long enough. You'd get a better price through an antiquarian bookseller or art dealer.

I see the Google ad for this thread is "2008 US Elections". What do they know that we don't? Pornographic American-POW pix?

eBay has an adults only section. You must be registered to access it, but just go to the "Everything Else" section - Tom

Well, er, honestly, it's not me. One of my workmates is having some work done on her basement ceiling, and the workman found a deck of porn playing cards from the 1920's or 1930's. With three jokers. The men wearing nothing but black socks and sock garters. There were also a couple of comic books along the same line (one Popeye, one a detective comic). She'd like to sell them, but where? Is there an antiquarian porn collectable section on E-Bay? And there's the question of mailing them across state lines. Any advice? No, really.
