Subject: RE: BS: World Junior Ice Hockey From: GUEST,meself Date: 07 Jan 09 - 10:58 AM We tried a similar thing with two world wars: killed off the best, brightest and bravest of the young (leaving the most unfit behind to procreate). Didn't work. War goes on unabated. |

Subject: RE: BS: World Junior Ice Hockey From: catspaw49 Date: 07 Jan 09 - 02:24 AM What an opportunity lost..........When you can find so many of the young in one place you need to cull them off. Its the surest way of freeing the world of hockey.....Get 'em at the source before they grow! Properly done, hockey will be extinct with just a few years, but you have to act now! Don't let these opportunies go by. Yours for a hockey-free world, Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: World Junior Ice Hockey From: GUEST,meself Date: 07 Jan 09 - 01:04 AM I don't remember - or wasn't aware of - the Wayne incident ... No, the boys weren't deliberately disrespectful - they were just so excited about winning that they didn't spare a thought for the unhappy bunch at the other end of the rink. It just would have been nice to hear someone say, "They played a really good game ... " Winning NHL players always used to make some suitable congratulatory comment like that in their post-game interviews; maybe they still do. It's just the classy thing to do, and somebody should be telling these young guys that. Be magnanimous in victory; compliment your defeated rivals (as opposed to rubbing their faces in it). We Canadians always like to tell each other and everybody else how 'nice' we are, so I think we should call ourselves on it when we're not particularly 'nice'. For instance, after the Canadian women defeated the Americans in that terrific game in Salt Lake City, the gloating of the Canadian captain was really embarrassing (yes, the officiating was biased, yes, it was a fierce rivalry, yes, the American women had said or done some rude things, but - it just wasn't classy to go on about how 'we showed them'. There - I've been waiting for four years to get that off my chest). I had an earlier post that disappeared - basically agreeing that the boys played a great game, no question about it, and deserved to win. |

Subject: RE: BS: World Junior Ice Hockey From: gnu Date: 06 Jan 09 - 03:42 PM For any "visitors" to this thread... this is five years in a row. meself.... I didn't see what you speak of so maybe this comment is not appropriate... I remember when Wayne cried on the TV as he was truly hurt when he said, "These guys hate us." That kind of hurt doesn't ease away quickly. Like I said... I did not watch any of that, so maybe I am TOTALLY wrong. Having said that, if the lads were in any way dispespectful, it's only a reason and certainly not an excuse. Even though the Canucks have been the butt of poor sportsmanship in various levels of hockey, that is no reason to return the favour... IF they did... I didn't watch anything after the final buzzer. |

Subject: RE: BS: World Junior Ice Hockey From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 06 Jan 09 - 10:46 AM "The Swedes put up a helluva fight ..." They did indeed! Take away the two empty netters and it was a real nailbiter. After that amazing comeback against Russia though, Canada's kids deserved the gold medal. |

Subject: RE: BS: World Junior Ice Hockey From: GUEST,meself Date: 06 Jan 09 - 10:28 AM It would have been nice, though, if someone had had the good grace to say, "The Swedes gave us a good run for our money", or something to that effect. And if the fans had shown a little more appreciation to 'our guests' when the awards were being handed out. The Swedes put up a helluva fight ... |
