Subject: RE: BS: How many on MC were hit by ice storm? From: Arkie Date: 22 Feb 09 - 10:42 AM North Arkansas was hit pretty hard. In town power was out for about a week, but a few miles out there was no power for a month. I think most have power now. There was also a near water crisis and boil order that few knew about. A lot of folk here do have generators, myself included, and that is great until the town's gasoline supply is gone. Fortunately the roads were clear when the tanks were pumped dry and the long lines at the two stations with generators were back. We also lost a lot of trees. Glad to say the two large limbs that fell on my house did not do much damage. |

Subject: RE: BS: How many on MC were hit by ice storm? From: Jeri Date: 21 Feb 09 - 06:12 PM It was a nightmare in NH in December. I know I mentioned this somewhere else, but I'm seriously considering caving in and buying a generator. At least I know I'm not likely to freeze to death, and that frozen food will still have ice crystals in it after 5 days in an unopened freezer. I still have broken trees lying about though. I lose my power here (usually for less time than 5 days) frequently. It must be a lot harder for someone living in a place unaccustomed to extended power outages. Sorry, dude. |

Subject: RE: BS: How many on MC were hit by ice storm? From: Peace Date: 21 Feb 09 - 04:29 PM Lived in the arctic for a few years. We were grateful when we got an ice storm because it provided building material so's we could construct a shelter. Jayto, hope Ron's arrival will get your head on something other than ice and snow. Maybe palm trees and cactussses/caktisses/cacttussis prickly plants. Wish I could be there. Best to you, Daddy. Bruce |

Subject: RE: BS: How many on MC were hit by ice storm? From: Bat Goddess Date: 21 Feb 09 - 03:46 PM During New England's last major ice storm (December 2008), I heard the figure $1 million per mile to put power lines underground. Seems to me that given the scale of our last ice storm -- half of New Hampshire's power customers were without power, and a substantial amount of us for over three days -- that somebody ought to start computing the cost/benefit ratio. Especially since climate change will result in more of these kind of events in the future. Curmudgeon and I were without power for six days -- without water for three. Linn |

Subject: RE: BS: How many on MC were hit by ice storm? From: skarpi Date: 21 Feb 09 - 03:35 PM put your electrical wires under ground and you wont loose your lights . yes it cost money , but it wont stop the firms in day times when people are workin , and in the long run its alot cheaper than have off for a long time . thats what we do here in the north , where we get ice storms alot in the winter time , we know how to responce . it has to be a verrrryyyyyy bad weather to everything goes out . the lines from the powerplants are on the ground , but all lines in the citys are underground , and now we are talkin about take the lines from the power plants underground as well . brrrrr its cold here now , All the best Skarpi Iceland |

Subject: RE: BS: How many on MC were hit by ice storm? From: Jayto Date: 21 Feb 09 - 02:41 PM Yep those lyrics are very true man. I am sitting here watching it snow right now. I can't lie we are not used to wintry weather here. We are pretty wimpy about it lol. I think it is because the temp jumps around so much we never have time to adjust to cold. It doesn't really get cold until December and then by Feb is jumping back up to the 70's at least once a wk. So one day it is beautiful and 70 or close to 70 and the next it is 20 with a wind chill in the single digits. Just like in the ice storm it was -13 one night and 2 days later it was 65. Then in March it rarely goes below freezing besides just occasional dips and by May it is hitting close to 100. April is nice and normally consistant warm but not too hot. Ok I sound like a weatherman lol but that has been the main talk around here for a month now. Everyone is reeling from the storm and wore out lol. cya JT |

Subject: RE: BS: How many on MC were hit by ice storm? From: bankley Date: 21 Feb 09 - 02:19 PM "Glass dripped from moody clouds and shroud coated Hopkins County It glazed all below with a glacial blow bowed low with the frozen bounty, Mighty were trees snapped like twigs cracked under a dead-weight day Dark as a hole in a mountain of coal, cold as old graveyard clay" hope things get restored soon, JT.. sorry to hear about all the freezer food spoiling.. it'll take awhile for the trees to recover from the stress as well...everything is affected.... a lot of folks in East Ontario and Quebec went through a heavy one in Jan. Subject: RE: BS: How many on MC were hit by ice storm? From: kendall Date: 21 Feb 09 - 01:31 PM We got hit here but not too bad. We Mainiacs are used to deprivation. This is just another benefit of global warming.Warm air over cold really creates a bad situation for those who live on the ground. |

Subject: BS: How many on MC were hit by ice storm? From: Jayto Date: 21 Feb 09 - 01:25 PM How many catters endured the last big ice storm in the US? I am in West Ky. and we were slammed hard. There are still people without power. We lost everything here for almost 2 wks and there are still people without. We lost water, power, communications you name it. It was rough to say the least. Here is one video I found on youtube showing some of the damage around here. 2009 Ice storm in Western Kentucky Now I am sitting here waiting for a snowstorm to hit. Is winter over yet? I am finished with it that is for sure. cya JT |
