Subject: RE: BS: Blatant advert for art work From: Alice Date: 13 Mar 09 - 12:55 PM Illustrators make a living selling the reproduction rights to buyers who use their work on products, in publications, etc. Don't sell the original or the copyright to the work. This is all explained in the Handbook I referred to in my previous post. Alice |

Subject: RE: BS: Blatant advert for art work From: Alice Date: 13 Mar 09 - 12:44 PM Hi, David, I'm a professional illustrator. The best course to follow for getting serious illustration clients is to be listed in the directories of illustration that are used by all ad agencies, publishers, media, etc. who buy illustration. The ones I've used are Directory of Illustration in the US. They publish a large print book annually that you buy a page or pages in showing your work, and also have online sites that illo buyers can access. Don't waste your time on "shows". The art directors who buy illustration use the professional directories. Here is the D of I site. http://www.directoryofillustration.com/ By the way, more illustration is now being purchased because the reproduction rights for photography have increased so much (mostly due to higher model fees) that illustration is a bargain in comparison. Make sure she has good contracts to protect her rights and understands the reproduction rights and fees for use that are fair. An invaluable tool is the Handbook of Pricing and Ethical Guidelines published by the Graphic Artists Guild. www.gag.org Alice btw, here is my web site http://www.aliceflynn.com |

Subject: RE: BS: Blatant advert for art work From: Sleepy Rosie Date: 12 Mar 09 - 01:06 PM Contacting her local art council and seeking an exhibition in a publicly funded art gallery, is also a way to gain publicity. But here she'd also need a reasonable sized portfolio. |

Subject: RE: BS: Blatant advert for art work From: Dave the Gnome Date: 12 Mar 09 - 12:53 PM Good plan, Rosie. And you have in fact reminded me that I have not put ANY web link on! (That's Gnomes for you...) They are on ebay at present roundabout here Thanks again Dave |

Subject: RE: BS: Blatant advert for art work From: Sleepy Rosie Date: 12 Mar 09 - 12:48 PM Does she have her own webpage? If so then she could use a link to it as a signature on any forum she visits. And this may sound 'cheap' but she probably aught to consider creating a good looking portfolio and touting her work to art stores like Arena, who will produce 'limited editions' of prints. |

Subject: BS: Blatant advert for art work From: Dave the Gnome Date: 12 Mar 09 - 12:35 PM Sorry if I am out of order here but young gnomo number 4 has started her aspiring art career after finishing Uni last year and I thought I would give her a bit of a hand in advertising. She only has 3 pieces for sale at the moment but an original artwork could make a nice pressie for someone:-) Lost amongst the thousands of bits on ebay I think she may be fighting a loosing battle but here on the 'cat we are a more appreciative audience:-) P&P prices are UK only I'm afraid but I am sure we can accomodate overseas delivery on application. Any suggestions for further advertising would also be very much appreciated. Cheers DeG |
