He was a fine actor, but he let his passions turn him into a neo-con jerk after 9/11. A good man, all in all.

After years of television in comedy roles I think I first saw him in a film with Angelica Huston, Enemies, A Love Story, from an Isaac Bashevis Singer novel. Blew me away.

I missed that one! He was a "television actor" who I think surprised people by being very good when he moved to film.

Hollywood and the film-loving audience have lost two eminently talented and respected individuals this week. Ron Silver passed away on Sunday after a two-year battle with esophageal cancer, and Natasha Richardson passed away earlier this evening after sustaining a head injury in a skiing accident.

Ron Silver was initially known to audiences as downstairs neighbor Gary Levy on the 1970s television series Rhoda, after which he went on to appear in many accomplished series including Chicago Hope, Law & Order, and The West Wing. His extensive film resume includes his perhaps best-known performance as colorful attorney Alan Dershowitz in Reversal of Fortune, opposite Jeremy Irons.

The veteran actor was also a political activist for much of his career, advocating for free speech and artists' rights; he co-founded the Creative Coalition and served as the president of the Actor's Equity Association from 1991-2000. He passed away peacefully at his home, and is survived by his parents, two brothers, and two children. He was 62.
