Subject: RE: Reload Button From: annamill Date: 14 Jul 99 - 07:33 PM Thanks Joe. I'm home now and i don't seem to have this problem. I will definitely use Max's links instead of the "BACK" button from now on. Thanks. Annap |

Subject: RE: Reload Button From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Jul 99 - 05:24 PM OK, I think I see the problem, Anna. I'm guessing you're using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 (MSIE) - am I right? I started to occasionally get those same error messages after I switched to MSIE 5 (but Netscape 4.5 is just about the same). First, let me make one very strong suggestion for everydody: If you have just posted a message and something goes wrong and you don't go back to the Forum Menu, DON'T hit the "reload" button on your browser. The conservative, safe thing to do is to get back to the screen with the message you were typing, and highlight and copy [CTRL-C] the message you had been posting. then click on one of the Forum Home links on the page to take you back to the Forum Home page - then check the thread to see if your message posted. If it didn't, paste it [CTRL-V] into the "Reply to thread" box and click once on "submit message." Try to avoid using any browser controls when you post messaqges - just use the links Max gave us, and you'll be much less likely to have problems. If you're just reading a thread and not posting, you can be a little more lax. I haven't had much success using that "repost from data" selection that sometimes comes up when I use the "refresh" button - but then I don't like using the "refresh" button, either. I think that message comes up with the "back" button at times, too - it's a new irritant that came with MSIE 5, and I highly dislike it - I don't think it's the 'Cat's fault at all. Like I say, it's best to use what Max has given us. If you can't get to the forum home page from a thread, maybe it's best to go all the way back to the Mudcat Home page, www.mudcat.org, and then click on the forum link from there. Am I making sense? In getting a little too detailed in my explanation, I may have obscured my main point: Use the links Max gave us, and generally avoid using the controls on your browser when you want to navigate the 'Cat. 'Nuff said. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Reload Button From: annamill Date: 14 Jul 99 - 04:52 PM Ok. I see a thread that sounds interesting and click on it. So far so good. I read all the postings, maybe add one, maybe not. Ten I hit my BACK button to get out of the thread and back to the main forum. It trys and I get a message that says something about my cache timing out and that I should hit the reload button. I hit the reload and a little form comes up that asks if I want to use form data. I hit yes and up comes the forum. I'll see if I can get the exact messages. Thank you Joe. annap |

Subject: RE: Reload Button From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Jul 99 - 04:14 PM Hmmm. Can you give me more of a description of what you do, Anna? What's the "from form" button you're talking about? You shouldn't have to use your browser's "reload" button at all on the 'Cat, and I suspect that the use of that button is one of the biggest causes of problems we have like double-posting. You should be able to navigate the 'Cat completely with the links Max has provided on every page, although it is sometimes faster to use the "back" browser button or the "backspace" key on your keyboard to get back to the page where you were before. Try to avoid using the "reload" or "refresh" button on your browser if you can. There are times, especially when Internet traffic is heavy, when you may have to try a couple of times to go from one page to another at the 'Cat. Some of this is dependent on your own Internet connection. I do most of my 'Catting late at night, after my sweetie has gone to work, and I rarely have any trouble then. Describe your problem in detail, and let's see if we can solve it. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Reload Button From: annamill Date: 14 Jul 99 - 03:51 PM It mentions a timeout error of some sort. Maybe our timeout is too short. It damned annoying though and I wish it wold stop. NOI Love, Annap |

Subject: RE: Reload Button From: Wolfgang Date: 14 Jul 99 - 03:42 PM No, it's not just you. Though I'd replace for me 'every time' by 'now and then'. Wolfgang |
