Your dad was telling the truth! Author, composer and lyrics are here is one version, anyway, and it was good enough for Grandpa Jones.

Your question started me thinking, trying to remember a short story by O Henry which I found right here.

My father used to sing this song every fall as we were raking the oak and pecan leaves. He said it was about a little girl who was dieing and her father tied the leaves to the trees. He also had a tendency to make stuff up so I have no idea if it was a real song
