When I made them, I wasn't really intending to make a bad hairlip joke

top right on the key board

Prt Scr
SysRq

http://i.ehow.com/images/GlobalPhoto/Articles/2253481/printscreen_Full.jpg
whatever screen you happen to have up on your monitor, even several cascaded windows, the print screen, will copy it all as an image.

Then open WORD, PAINT or a photo editor program and either right click paste or Ctrl and V keys or edit paste. Drops the entire image into the document or application.

Then use appropriate tools to edit the image.

A print screen key? I don't think I've got one of those, VT - unless it's masquerading as something else...

This year I was thinking about a Jacko Lantern in memory of MJ but a severe dose of Penguin Flu prevented me developing the idea. Otherwise, I'm very much a neep / snammie man myself and am saddened that pumpkins seem to the vegetable of choice for hallowe'en lanterns in England these days. Hell, you know things are bad when our Hapless Repatriate enters a thread without banging about the loss of our own good culture to American imports! Shame on you, WAV.

Otherwise - fine stuff all round & lovely lanterns. Nice link there, VT though I couldn't figure out how to save my effort which is maybe just as well given my somewhat puerile state of mind right now.

I click on print screen to copy the pic and drop into paint, or photo editor to crop the edges and then save.

I miss pumpkin pie.

OOh, yes, nutmeg, and dusted on the whipped cream. Getting forgetful in my third childhood.

What? No nutmeg?

Pumpkin pie is my specialty. I make a winning pastry crust.

The E. D. Smith pumpkin comes in a can large enough to make two pies.
I prefer my own mix of spices, most store-or bakery-bought are heavy on ginger and little else. I admit, if my wife didn't make the pastry I would use store-bought shells.
Given before, but have to post it in all pumpkin threads.

One 28-oz can pure pie pumpkin
1 cup Demerara sugar
1 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons molasses
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla
3 teaspoons ground cinammon
1/4 teaspoon powdered cloves
1 1/2 teaspoons powdered ginger
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoon salt
4 large eggs slightly beaten
2 cups scalded milk (or part cream)
Mix in order given. Will fill two pie shells.

Optional- add grated orange rind.

Bake 15 minutes at 425F, 1 hour at 325F.

Serve topped with whipped cream with a little whisky and powdered sugar whipped in.

Note: Pie pumpkins are somewhat ovoidal, a different strain from the Halloween pumpkins.

...I was thinking: scoop out, boil into soup, pour back into pumpkin, consume, then cut out a "jack-o-lantern"..?

I have a GREAT recipe for pumpkin pie. When it comes on sale at the Real Atlantic Stupistore, I buy a few for the freezer. No mess either.

Odd that before Canuck Thanksgiving I saw the canned stuff for pumkin deserts at $3.69 each. Ya need two fer one pie plus the other stuff and ya gotta make pie crust and... and... in the bakery section the large pies, which are very tastety, were on sale for $3.99.

Usually I do pirate pumpkins but this year it's a flying saucer (with portholes all around), complete with flashing lantern inside. Unfortunately I can't figure out a way for it to take off and hover.

Maybe next year.

I think Swedes are better. They smell earthier, like an open grave, and they look scarier.

Yes, those are clever. Matching those 2 pumpkins must not have been easy.

Your message made me think of one other interesting thing. It's been a long time since I've heard the term "jack-o-lantern". It must be disappearing from our vocabulary. Mostly people just call them "pumpkins"—either carved or uncarved.

Go to Google Images and search for pumpkin and you get 18,600,000 hits, and you also see that about half of the images depict carved pumpkins, i.e. jack-o-lanterns.

Search for jack o lantern and you get 1,940,000 hits.

(You also see some interesting pictures.)

In other words, we use the word "pumpkin" about 5-10 times as often as we use the term "jack-o-lantern" even when we're talking about jack-o-lanterns.

More interesting than talking about the BNP, in my opinion.

When I went looking for this year's pumpkins, I found a lot of them were green. I sorted for one ripe, one green, in the best match I could find, and completed these last evening. Dawgawn but I'm clever!
