Subject: RE: NEW TUNE - NEED LYRICS:Three Flowers/Ben Hall From: John in Brisbane Date: 30 Jul 99 - 03:50 AM Helen, I first learned the tune I posted about 25 years ago, and sang it for a short while. I have a couple of times since then heard the'original' Irish tune, but no idea what it was. I've only ever heard WCB in a major key. Intriguing! Regards, John |

Subject: RE: NEW TUNE - NEED LYRICS:Three Flowers/Ben Hall From: Helen Date: 30 Jul 99 - 03:30 AM John The tune sounds like one of the versions of The Wild Colonial Boy to me. I did a search on the net to see if I could find out what the original tune was but no luck so far. Infoseek found over a hundred refs to TWCB and I'm about a third of the way through checking them. I also looked it up in John Meredith's Folksongs of Australia but it just mentions various people that Meredith collected the tune from. Helen |

Subject: Tune Add: THE BALLAD OF BEN HALL'S GANG From: Bob Bolton Date: 29 Jul 99 - 11:55 PM G'day John,
I had a look in The Penguin Australian Songbook vol. 1 and John Manifold gives 2 different tunes to The Ballad of Ben Hall's Gang, which is the song you quoted. The Death of Ben Hall is a different song, collected from Sally Sloane, of Lithgow and has it's own tune in the Dorian mode.
Manifold's version of THE BALLAD OF BEN HALL'S GANG is a composite of the recollections of a number of people, several of them on the Bandicoot Ballads publishing committee. He reckoned that the first tune is known as The Black Horse or possibly The Airy Bachelor. This is the first tune for which I give a MIDIText file: bal-bhg1.

He gave the second tune as "one of those to" WILLIAM RILEY and this tune is the second one, bal-bhg2.

I seem to remember listing off these details a bit over a year back, so I guess there must be a past thread ... and maybe a DT entry ... somewhere down there! Regards, Bob Bolton |

Subject: Lyr Add: THREE FLOWERS From: Brakn Date: 29 Jul 99 - 06:08 AM Here's THREE FLOWERS. I'm wasn't sure whether you needed it or not. I couldn't find it in the DT. The air is similar to the Turfman From Ardee Ben Hall I don't know. Regards Mick Bracken

Subject: Tune Add: THREE FLOWERS / THE DEATH OF BEN HALL From: John in Brisbane Date: 29 Jul 99 - 01:43 AM This one has me a bit confused. This is a trad tune, but I don't know its original name - it could even be in the DT. It is used for at least two sings that I have heard:
(1) THE THREE FLOWERS - As I was walking down a lane as night was drawing nigh, I met a colleen with three flowers and she more young than I, ... the rest of the song refers to fallen Irish heroes . (2) THE DEATH OF BEN HALL - Come all you sons of liberty and listen to my song, a story of bushranging days I will to you ???, ..let's sit and sing God Save the King, Dunn, Gilbert and Ben Hall.
I've lost my copy of the Penguin Australian Songbook and as I recall the name of the tune is in there.
Any help please?
Regards, John
