With the helicopters, cargo planes and supply ships, hospital ship, medical personnel and troops to keep order and distribute supplies, the US military is doing a good job.
All agencies seem to be doing their best in a devastated country.

Don't know about the US Military but I know the the British military are sending people over on civilian ships with the aid to get it there and to help.

Red Cross, Oxfam and Medecins sans frontiers don't need inexperienced do gooders getting under their feet and diverting potentially useful funds into badly managed inappropriate projects.

Donate to the Red Cross. No point in fragmenting the response. And lobby your congressman to get the tropps withdrawn and replaced by real aid workers.

I would say donate to the Salvation Army. When Katrina hit New Orleans the Red Cross held back until areas were secured by troops. But the Salvation Army went straight in. The Salvation Army were the first ones in at the World Trade Center as well.

Some new funds have been created specifically for Haiti Relief.
The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund is one of these.

Here is one connected with my company. Since 2007, 3000 women and children in Haiti have been given free medical and dental care through it. The couple who started it have funded it themselves and pledged a percentage of the proceeds of the sale of a company they sold to us to the Foundation. We are having an office raffle to support the foundation. The company is matching any funds collected. I will let you know how we do.

The wife of one of our agents (Sloane) is involved in The Women and Children's Hope Foundation. Through the organization she is mobilizing an emergency response to the disaster in Haiti, and she is departing February 6th for Port au Prince with a team of doctors and nurses.

The Women and Children's Hope Foundation is a self funded "operating foundation" and 501C3. The Women and Children's Hope Foundation has treated over 3000 women and children to free medical and dental care in Haiti during humanitarian trips in 2008 & 2009.

For the first time ever, The Women and Children's Hope Foundation will be accepting donations of money to purchase antibiotics, dressings, orthopedic supplies, and water purification systems to bring to Haiti on February 6th.

They are setting up The Women and Children's Hope Foundation Haiti Fund. 100% of the donations (every single dollar donated) will go to pay for these crucial supplies to help those most in need in Haiti. It is important to note that all administrative expenses including flights, shelter and food for the team of doctors and nurses are being paid for out of the foundation's assets, not from donated dollars.

PowerPay has established a merchant account to accept donations at no cost to the Foundation and will donate the processing fees. In addition, and at the request of many of you, the Giving Committee will donate the proceeds from our raffle on Friday, January 28th to the Haiti Fund.

Troops are needed to maintain order in a demoralized and disorganized country. The planned 16,000 may have to be augmented.

Aid workers, including US Military medical personnel aboard hospital and support ships, seem to be there or on the way in sufficient numbers.
Logistics of supply is a major problem, needing careful, central management.

One reason many people support charities other than the Red Cross is its very high administrative and personnel costs, also a reason for its somewhat lower rating on the Charity Navigator, linked by Joe Offer.

Meds & Food for Kids has a very impressive YouTube Video, but I can't find much information on their reputation as a charity - nothing negative, but nothing positive either. They don't appear to have been rated by Charity Navigator or the Better Business Bureau. Guidestar has no rating, but does supply this mission statement for Meds & Food for Kids:

Severe malnutrition is the leading cause of mortality in children under five. Our mission is to save the lives of sick, malnourished children in Haiti through a proven program of medicine, education, and a fortified food product eaten in the child's own home. This peanut-based therapeutic food is ready to eat, requires no refrigeration, and contains significant trace minerals and antioxidants, accounting for its much better success rates compared to current World Health Organization recommended therapies. A cornerstone of our mission is to aid in the development of the Haitian economy by producing RUTF in Haiti.

Charity Navigator has a list of charities providing aid in Haiti, with ratings for each charity.

My cousin in Minnesota (a folk musician and one of the founders of the Cedar Cultural Center in the twin cities) is involved in this organization: I just heard from my cousin in Minnesota about an aid project in Haiti..producing food for undernourished children. They would be a good project to support if you are wanting to send aid

Meds and... Foods for Kids makes RUTF (Ready to Use Therapeutic Food) for under nourished toddlers. They employ locals and help to provide nourishing food for children.
