I will never forget my wife's first (and last) attempt at navigation on a time trial.

"Turn left at the next junction, dear,....NNNNNNOOOOOOO, THE OTHER LEFT!

Ho hum. We've been married forty five years this April. I think she might have left me years ago, but couldn't find her way out.

Here's the marching song we would chant on long, long hikes:

Left, left, left, left,
I left my wife and forty-nine kids
In a house of detention
Without any gingerbread.
Did I do right, right, right, right?
Ooop-a-daisy [doing a little double-step shuffle],
Left, left, left, left . . . .

Then last summer when a friend from Germany came to visit, we went hiking and she started chanting:

Recht, recht, recht, recht,
Ein Hut, ein Stock, ein Regenschirm,
Und vorwärts, rückwärts, seitwärts, d'ran!

Maybe she started favoring her left hand because she learned it by observation from her siblings, and then just naturally reverted to her native handedness.

All 3 of my kids were left handed. But the youngest, when she was about 2 and 1/2 switched from left to right. It was such a curious thing to watch. She would pick up everything with her left hand, then put the item into her right. Toys, food, spoon. Didn't matter what it was, she picked it up with left and put it into her right.

Wonder why she did that. She is right handed now.

Better decide which side you're on".

I'm always right. Which means I'm left. See?

No Kat. But that is about the only time I know my left hand is called my left hand.

I was over at Dani's once, helping with food prep for a catering job. I had brought my handy crank-powered apple peeler -corer-slicer. I demonstrated how it is used then prepared to turn the job over to one of the girls, telling them they would need to turn it around to accommodate their right-handedness. Dani and both girls looked at me blankly for a minute - then informed me I was using it right-handed. I had no idea. When I thught about it, I realized that sometimes I set it up to crank with my right hand, and sometimes with my left, and didn't notice the difference.

It's not my fault. Living in a right-handed world, us lefties absorb the message that your right hand is the hand you use the most. I use my left hand the most. Therefore my left hand is my right hand.

That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!

I have a terrible time distinquishing between left and right.

I come across as an idiot when some one stops me to ask directions. "Go two blocks to the stop sign, then (long pause while I flap my arms, wiggle my fingers, scrunching my face in concentration, trying to remember which is left and which is right) -then turn left - no- right-no-wait -( then, raising the correct hand) - whichever hand this is."

T'was easier when I was married, 'cuz I knew the hand with the ring was the left hand.

Everyone in my large birth family are righties but my father prided himself on his ability to use a hammer effectively with either hand. He said that in a tight corner it was a great advantage. Several of my nephews are lefties. In other words, our family was completely in the norm.

During the last election campaign I was startled to see that both candidates were/are lefties.

I grew up thinking that left-handed people were somehow smarter than righties. Don't know where I got that idea but perhaps I had noticed that many (most?) of the creative kids I knew were lefties.

I think most of us lefties tend to be more ambidextrous than righties. Could be because we early on do have to learn to many thing right-handed, but I think it has more to do with the hardwiring differences than that.

My son is predominantly right-handed, but plays guitar and bats left-handed. He is comfortably ambidextrous with a lacrosse stick.

Handedness is also known in the animal kingdom and not just in human animals. I guess trying to tie a horses hoof up, because it led with the left leg say, would be detrimental to a lot of our history. Chimps show it for sure. Heaven only knows what cephalopods do!

My brother is left-handed. My granddaughter is left-handed. The amount of people I know who are left-handed makes me wish I had but half of their talent for art or whatever they turn their hand to.

Have you ever noticed left-handed guitar players? Their style seems so different. Dave Gibb comes to mind. I never seen such music come from so few finger movements. Pure talent. Remarkable in its effects.

Yet another genetic trait that has been shown such intolerance and discrimination. I have yet to meet a stupid left-handed person. It's there fo all to see, even in the womb, a left-handed child will suck it's left thumb. If only they knew how much extra their trait will cost them. So many left-handed things are more expensive than their more common counterpart.

I, too, go with the idea of acceptance over tolerance. Acceptance always feels better than being tolerated. But being tolerated is better than being discriminated against.

I wonder if Jesus was/is left handed?

I, alas, am but right-handed :-(

My partner's mum bought me one of those potato peeler thingies after watching me peel potatoes with a paring knife one Christmas. She said you lose a lot less potato with a peeler, and wanted to know why I didn't just use the one in the drawer. I said, "Because it's right-handed." So she went out and bought me one you can use whether you're right or left-handed, bless her.

that's brilliant Ruth

Provocative behaviour in youth has been going on forever. Young people are hard wired to react against the "norms" imposed by adult society. You may as well get over it, because there is nothing you can do about it. Another thing to think about is that the imposition of a morality bears the seeds of contention. Someone is always going to rebel against imposition. That is human nature. And praise be to whatever made us individuals.

The only morality we should ever model and expect of each other is utter respect for the life and well being of the individual. If all practised this, there would be tolerance to spare. If some people are not so inclined it is due to being damaged in mind and/or spirit. Such people need to be contained so they cannot harm others and in that containment given good care and respect.

As a recovering baptist, I left the church partly due to collective judgemental intolerance of certain groups. Having since embarked in higher education and been introduced to logical thinking, I have decided for myself that I shall eschew any group that sets itself as better, or more informed, or superior in anyway to any other group.

So having said that, I wish no harm to any person. But I do take issue with groups that indoctrinate individuals to take an intolerant view to any other.

As this IS still a music site (I think) here is a little ditty from
Ian Radburn

Left-Hander's Lament

Now here's the story of my life,
I've had fun but lots of strife,
For I was born left-handed, but I'm proud
To be one of the elite, right-handers we can beat
We're the 10% that stand out from the crowd!

But as a little lad, oh the problems that I had
Winding clockwork toys was just a mystery
Tying laces was a pain, couldn't get it in my brain
Everything was back-to-front it seemed to me

Chorus
We're the Cack-Handed Kings, we're the LEFTIES
You right-handers just haven't got a clue
'Cos if you'd been through what we've been through
Then maybe you would feel superior too!

At 5 I started school where I was treated like a fool
Being left-handed I stood out from the pack
And learning how to write was not a struggle - more a fight
For I had my left hand tied behind my back

"Now get it in your head" the sympathetic teacher said
"You use the right and not the Devil's side"
Those supposed men of vision caused me pain and such derision
Is it any wonder often times I cried?

We're the Gibble Fisted Friends, we're the LEFTIES (repeat chorus)

Time then came when my voice dropped
And my face was one big spot
But I was glad to see my teenage years arrive,
Because I use my left, I was different from the rest
And the girls saw me as something of a prize!

I learned some handy tricks in the back row of the flicks
It used to drive my girlfriends all berserk
For their eyes would keep apace of my right hand - just in case
And they never saw my left one go to work!

We're the Southpawed Princes, we're the LEFTIES (repeat chorus)

Well I'm married now, worst luck
But my wife has given up
Asking me to help with chores like peeling spuds,
Or trying to cut the bread, I'll get a 4 x 2" wedge
Lose three fingertips and half a pint of blood

I would love to be a dad, but we've hit a little snag
If you can help please tell us what to do
The problem simply said, is that I'm a left-hand thread
But my wife you see, now she's a right-hand .....OH, YES WE'RE THE

Scrummy-Handed Heroes, we're the LEFTIES (repeat chorus)

Now we reach today, where you stand and watch me play
And yes, I play right-handed it is true
For the very simple fact is that I've had to adapt
Something all we southpaws have to try and do

We have trouble tying ties, writing cheques out, using knives
and scissors made for use in your right hand
And when it comes to sport once again we are left short
In hockey and in polo we are banned

We're the Cuddy Wifter Winners, we're the LEFTIES (repeat chorus)

Now I've finished off my song and as you move along
Please bear in mind the things I've had to say
And please show some respect for your friends who use the left
Thanks for listening to me this Left-Handers Day.

My daughter is left-handed and so was my ex-husband. And so am I. For 15 years I lived in a totally left-handed household! But we still only had right-handed scissors in the house, for some reason.

In schools in the UK they seem to provide equal numbers of pairs of right- and left-handed scissors - either that or a lot of the right-handed ones have gone missing. The result is that whenever kids have to cut things out, there is a litany of "Miss! I can't use these scissors - they're left-handed!" To which I usually reply, "Now you know how we feel all the time!"

At 5'2" but no eyes of blue, I really appreciate your forgiveness, Janie bar Sinsister (Neat typo, I am leaving it!) My dad was made to switch left to right; it was a very sore point for him.

Where we lived in New England there was a Lefies shop in the mall; everything a leftie could want. In the meantime, how about this from HERE:

We wondered the same thing, Dean.    I don't remember exactly, but something like a total professional staff of 10 or 12 people. I do remember the day in treatment team when we realized the vast majority of us were left-handed. I've worked in two additional clinics since then. The percentage of lefties in those clinics was higher than in the general population, but not a majority.

In that first clinic, one clinician had stumbled upon a "lefties" shop in an airport and brought back a coffee mug that I wish I had. It said something like this "Everyone is born left-handed. As soon as you commit your first sin, God makes you right-handed."

Being a sinfully tolerant person, I forgive all you righties, especially those of you who are both shorter than 5' 6" and never mastered "the bump."

Janie, at the risk of breaking up my own "roll" of slightly angry sarcasm for the moment, I find that interesting; approx what total number of doctors and clinicians would that have been? I wonder if the stats are skewed significantly in occupations like that.

Rapaire,

My father-in-law, born 1911 and now deceased, wrote right-handed. Nearly every time he saw me hold a pen in my left hand, he would comment on the frequent raps the nuns administered to the knuckles on his left hand until he learned to make the conversion.

For several years I worked at mental health clinic where 75% - yes, you heard me right -75% of us doctors and clinicians were left-handed.

MWHAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

(I confess, not everyone was at least 5 1/2 feet tall.)

I, however, am taller than that. Might that be enough to warrant redemption?

I don't want any pain with this. In fact, I don't want any pain for any reason at all. God told me I didn't have to have any so I don't want any (God was not a grade school nun).

And Ebbie, you have to realize that that so called "acceptance" of yours is, in effect, promotion of all manner of evil. Just this morning, at Tim Horton's, I heard a respected local pastor observe that real Christians find the National Council of Churches and the the World Council of Churches repugnant, because they have been PROMOTING homosexuality.

Ah, Jade; I bet I have you pegged; I bet anything you're less than 5'6" yourself, but you know that we can't see that, and in your misery and self loathing you're lashing out at yourself, and others like you. That is, of course, quite understandable, since being shorter than average is obviously one form of being ABNORMAL .
REPENT my dear child, and pray; perhaps God will heal you of your affliction, and make you TALL!!

If I were to construct a God I would furnish Him with some way and qualities and characteristics which the Present lacks. He would not stoop to ask for any man's compliments, praises, flatteries; and He would be far above exacting them. I would have Him as self-respecting as the better sort of man in these regards.
He would not be a merchant, a trader. He would not buy these things. He would not sell, or offer to sell, temporary benefits of the joys of eternity for the product called worship. I would have Him as dignified as the better sort of man in this regard.
He would value no love but the love born of kindnesses conferred; not that born of benevolences contracted for. Repentance in a man's heart for a wrong done would cancel and annul that sin; and no verbal prayers for forgiveness be required or desired or expected of that man.
In His Bible there would be no Unforgiveable Sin. He would recognize in Himself the Author and Inventor of Sin and Author and Inventor of the Vehicle and Appliances for its commission; and would place the whole responsibility where it would of right belong: upon Himself, the only Sinner.
He would not be a jealous God--a trait so small that even men despise it in each other.
He would not boast.
He would keep private Hs admirations of Himself; He would regard self-praise as unbecoming the dignity of his position.
He would not have the spirit of vengeance in His heart. Then it would not issue from His lips.
There would not be any hell--except the one we live in from the cradle to the grave.
There would not be any heaven--the kind described in the world's Bibles.
He would spend some of His eternities in trying to forgive Himself for making man unhappy when he could have made him happy with the same effort and he would spend the rest of them in studying astronomy.

i tell you we have ruined this counrty of ours!!!

accepting people who are shorter than 5'6, who weigh more than a reliant robin.

this is an outrage!
yet we tolerate them in decent society. they waddle around elbowing people in the ribs and you can't even shout at them because one can't see down that low. the only people that should be that sort are children under the age of 10.

i ask you good people, what next???
i say get rid of them all, we have no use for these 'people'.

who will back my campaign to make britain tall again?? after that , the world?
who will no longer be told who to accept?

i ask you, my friends, my most respected friends. please join my quest?

with a loving but proud heart.

Janie! How could you! I am surprised- nay, shocked.

'Tis funny- I grew up with the same strictures and inevitable expostulations. I know people - relatives - who still adhere to those same 'standards'. I and my brothers have wondered at times what makes Person A 'go astray' and Persons B and C in reaction to the defections cling all the tighter. I have never come close to an explanation.

I would quibble with the word 'Tolerance', though. 'Acceptance' is a fuller word.

Oh lordy, frogprince - your post is causing flashbacks -

1st day of first grade, teacher humiliated me in front of the whole class for my left-handedness. Ma complained to the principal and it never happened again, but that teacher had it in for me the entire year.

At age 21 I was working as a relief "houseparent" at a fundamentalist Christian group home for teenage foster kids. Got fired for dancing with the girls in the rec room on Saturday night to music on the record player. "Because of the regulations of the State, we can not prohibit our charges from listening to that music and dancing to it, but you have failed in your Christian duty to set an example of moral behavior to these girls!"

"Tolerance"

There are few terms more abused in contemporary society, particularly by those seeking to impose liberal so-called "standards" on a previously God-fearing nation, than the word tolerance. It has become virtually impossible for the few remaining true Christians in our society to stand up against anything without being accused of so-called "intolerance". Even among those who would seek to maintain some modicum of moral norms, many have stood so long on the slippery slope of "tolerance" that they no longer feel the angle of the oozing, crumbling surface beneath their feet.

The examples of the damage that has already been done are virtually countless. For decades already, almost all of American society has "tolerated" social so-called "dancing", with it's blatantly provocative movements, and grinding public contact between pubic areas; yet we profess to be at a loss as to what has become of the morality of today's youth.

Few people today realize that one of the earliest, most deplorable examples of the undermining of public decency by "tolerance" is the acceptance of left-handedness. Millenia, even decades ago, this perversion was recognized for the abomination which it is. The very word "sinister" derives from the latin pertaining to the left side. Not that long ago, children who displayed the syndrome were corrected forcibly. Among elderly Americans, no more than an estimated six percent retain the affliction. Then, with almost no resistance from the supposed Christians among us, liberals began to promote "tolerance" of left-handedness. The results have proven devestating. Today an estimated 12.6 percent of young American males, and even an estimated 9.9 percent of our women, are left handed. Not only are the statistics themselves appaling, but the condition is almost universally accepted as "normal". An entire society has somehow become blinded, by the influence of the liberal "tolerant", to the blatant perversion of logic that is required in order to label any characteristic limited to such a small minority as "normal",

It has come to the point where our institutions of learning now make it an openly stated policy to teach our innocent children "tolerance" of those who vary from the norms under which we were raised. Those who try to rise up against such evil are persecuted at every level, from the local school board meeting to the halls of congress and the supreme court. How long can we expect God to withhold His wrath, before his judgement falls heavy on a people who have departed en masse from His ways?
