It was a silly prank. The only sensible reactions would have been to either chuckle at it or ignore it. There are those who chose to be offended by it. I am reminded of Harvey Andrews comments here some time ago about the "Culture of Offendedness".

A junior civil servant, a person holding a position on a par with someone who works in your local Job Centre
It was a prank which backfired, and was NEVER going to become official government policy.

John - The difference is that the comments about The Pope came from a Government Official , not from a casual Jokester .

Well I'm sorry, but what is the difference between these silly suggestions, and all the jokes about US presidents who couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time?
I should think that a modicum of levity is something the Catholic church might welcome, in the midst of all the castigation they are undergoing at the moment.
Lighten up folks.

Such 'Humourous' comments by Private Eye , or any other organisation unconnected with the Government is a totally different matter to such comments from people in some form of official oisition !

Paul . The Pope is an INVITED guest to this country so ANY ONE in a 'responsible' position has NO reason for insults of that nature against him .
I imagine this was a 'Snigger Snigger' In Joke that was let out to the real World .
And I would expect strong action against any one who was involved in a similar 'Joke' no matter WHICH head of state was involved .

Ok then Paul, treated with respect by the people who invited him.

Otherwise don't invite him.

Pinochet was invited to this country, and didn't deserve to be treated with respect. As was Mugabe, and I bet they wish they'd let Tatchell arrest him then.

Paul, whatever you think of the Pope, he has been invited to this country therefore he deserves to be treated well as a guest.

I also think that the person responsible for this should be sacked.

Remember a few years ago when Emperor Hirohito was due to visit the UK Private Eye magazine went with the headline, ' THE EYE SAYS PISS OFF BANDYLEGS '

Put the Duke of Edinburgh in charge of the arrangements and that should ensure all runs smoothly!

That's tripe LF. You wouldn't hesitate to insult the head of Thailand, Burma, Iran, North Korea, and many others, because they are creeps. As head of an organisation who has KNOWINGLY protected its members from prosecution for serious crimes, Nazinger is a creep too. Rather than getting upset about being satirised, the Catholic hierarchy should be on their knees in sackcloth and ashes begging forgiveness, when they are not opening their archives to the police to bring these criminals to justice.

The Clot who was 'put on other duties' should have been Summarily dismissed in my opinion !
Whate ever your Religious persuasion , an insult to a head of state (which the Pope IS) of that order is well beyond the pale !
