My dad served in North Africa. He used to tell the tale of seeing a cloud of dust, and trying to decide if it was a camel or a German patrol. He didn't care to shoot a Camel. It turned out to be neither. It was General Patton on an unnanounced tour of the front.

I read about it way back when sometime, Ebbie. I've read hundreds of books about WWII over the years, so I couldn't say exactly where I read about the stuff I mention above, but maybe try a Google search. The fact is, all sides committed atrocities now and then. Some atrocities (specially the very well-organized and large scale Nazi ones) get far more press than others do, as is usually the case after a war. People are under tremendous stress in a war, and they end up doing horrible things they wouldn't have dreamt of doing in peacetime. It creeps up on them incrementally, and it usually seems like "the right thing to do at the time"...or the unavoidable thing.

There's footage on Youtube of American submariners, for instance, casually machine-gunning Japanese survivors in the water from the deck of their submarine after sinking the Japanese boat, and they seem to be enjoying it. It's sickening to see, but they clearly felt at the time that it was a perfectly justifiable thing to do. The Japanese (many of them, not all of them) felt the same way about doing stuff like that to American survivors in the water, so there was a lot of tit-for-tat revenge taking going on.

This is the sort of thing you either put people on trial for after a war....or you just brush it under the carpet and pretend that it never happened.

I came upon that particular Youtube video by accident while looking for live footage from the Pacific War. The section with the machine gunning of the Japanese in the water is just one brief segment in a series of clips from the naval war in 1945.

Something like that, mousethief. ;-) Doesn't sound like they were exactly out to kill the donkey, though...his death was simply an accessory to the plan (what's called "collateral damage"). Similarly, in WWII various nations on both sides were training dogs to carry explosives on their bodies and rush under enemy tanks to detonate them. This naturally would result in the death of the dog, but the dogs were not shown that last part during basic training. I think the US Navy has tried to train dolphins for the same general purpose...only to blow up ships.

USAAF airmen flying over Germany in 1944 and 1945 were advised to shoot at anything which might contribute to maintaining the German economy. Accordingly, they bombed and strafed trains, boats, vehicles of all kinds, soldiers, AND civilian men, women, and children who were caught out in the open, AND farm animals in the fields. They shot at every living thing they could see....and that was official policy passed down by their high command.

One Mustang pilot was heard to remark to another after a typical strafing mission, "I hope to God we win this war, because we'll be in a whole heap of trouble if we don't..."

Similar things were done by some American helicopter crews in Vietnam.

Did you think only Islamic "terrorists" do it? Who is the terrorist's terrorist in this world? He is the man who has at his command an entire modern army, air force, and navy. That guy can do terrorism on a scale that will make your head swim...they call it "Shock and Awe".

I believe that quite a few animals of one sort or another,certainly including donkeys,have been shot by British soldiers,sailors and airmen,in most parts of the world,at times of nervousness and unrest, but always after the obligatory "Who goes there ?" of course!

Talkbacks (103)   A small Syrian-backed terrorist group in Gaza said its activists blew up a donkey cart laden with explosives close to the border with Israel on Tuesday, killing the animal but causing no human casualties.

Abu Ghassan, spokesman for the terrorist group, said more than 200 kilograms of dynamite were heaped on the animal-drawn cart. He added that the explosives were detonated 60 meters from the concrete security barrier that separates the territory from Israel.

The donkey was killed in the blast, but there were no reports of human casualties. Israeli troops routinely patrol the border, and impoverished Gazans often gather rubble in the area.

The Israeli military confirmed the blast, but had no further comment. The IDF said Gaza terrorists also fired two mortar shells into Israel on Tuesday, which fell in the Netiv Ha'asara area without causing damage or casualties.

Earlier this week, masked gunmen from an Islamist group torched a UN-run summer camp for children and teens in Gaza.

The head of UNRWA in Gaza, John Ging, said the assailants tied up the guard, burned tents and vandalized bathrooms at the campgrounds. UN officials said the attackers left behind three bullets and a note threatening to kill Ging and others unless the UN cancels its activities for some 250,000 Gaza children.

Two days before the incident, the previously unknown "The Free of the Homeland" group issued a statement criticizing the camp's organizer, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), for "teaching schoolgirls fitness, dancing and immorality."
