I had the distinct pleasure of swapping correspondence with him after he said something one Saturday morning. I disagreed with his opinion and we discussed it over several e-mails.

It's really simple. The "reporters" of today HAVE to be pretty. Daniel - God bless him - came up in an era where that's the last thing they thought about. It was all about getting the story.

Daniel Schorr is to me who Eric Severide was to Schorr. Eric had such a distinguished and to my ears unique means of using English I rarely ever understood what he was saying because I was I formost in awe at how he was saying it.
Daniel to my ears was 100% comprhensible.

today we have commentators like Todd or Biff or Skip or Shelly.
They are preening MC's who make declarations like "Why has Obama never discussed race...we'll be right back with more after this important message". They actually see themselves as valuable announcers and gatekeepers of truth and justice who do as they are told to maintain a successful TV career.

When they encounter a real NEWSperson, they look condescendingly at them and and allude to them being the losers in the media spotlight. Todd is all ego. These moderators today are not journalists but ineleoquent spin hucksters reading editors copy off a prompter who do not even realize that they are empty of the value of being a human being first and an elequent messenger second.

Danial wrote his own copy. You could feel the human being behind and inside the words.

or am i too harsh on the whipersnappers?

How very sad for all of us as we're here and one of the best from a great generation is gone.......and one of the last. Not enough can be said about Dan Schorr and to compare anyone today to him is impossible.

I will really, really miss him. His voice always comforted me, somehow, with its hard-earned wisdom and clear view.

Read Scott Simon's farewell, especially William Safire's comments. It makes me happy to think of William and Daniel hanging on a deck somewhere, shootin' the shit.

No kidding, Don. I will really miss hearing him on NPR. I cannot think of anyone comparable to them, nowadays. One blog said Schorr was the last of Murrow's "boys."

What a good long run and how thankful that he shared so much of himself with us, right up to the end.

I can honestly say I saw the best and knew it. Daniel Schorr and Edward R. Murrow. The news will never be as fair and balanced.

Daniel Schorr has been a regular with Scott Simon on Weekend Edition on Saturdays for years, so though I missed the first bit of the news when I turned on the radio, I knew that by Scott's tone, and by Scott being the one to make the announcement, that we must have lost Daniel.

He had a great run, and I was glad he was on the ball and offering commentary up to the very end.
