I believe there will be a room set aside for session/s.I suspect tere will be multiples. I amsure that if you ask at the front desk they'll know where to send you, and I also suspect there will be sign/s. The hotel will probably well taken over by the festival folks.

Next weekend try the top floor of the Sheraton Hotel at 75 & Mockingbird after the Irish Festival (www.nitif.org) closes up for the night (starting 10-ish or so). Always a great time, which I will be sadly missing for the first time in many years (had to move to Minneapolis as a result of the telecom meltdown).

The first Sunday of each month there's an open jam at The Ranchman's Steakhouse in Ponder, Texas. If you can find Ponder, you've found the Ranchman's. Led by George Merritt, who plays bluegrass guitar, fiddle, banjo, etc., it begins about 3:00 in the afternoon and goes to whenever. George has a solo gig there after the jam.

The Tipp now runs sessions on Wed night (Open Irish Session) and two acoustic music jams on Sun at 3 and at 7. Trinity Hall runs an Irish Trad Session on Sunday nights at 6.

The best jam in Dallas - and one of the best open sessions in the US is at The Sons of Hermann Hall every Thursday night starting about 730-ish. There will be three or four rooms full of pickers - of various abilities. ALL are welcome, and made to feel at home. This is a great session, and has been going strong at least a dozen years.

Thanks to all for your comments. I must say, I went again last night to the Sons of Hermann Hall Thursday night jam, and it was absolutley excellent!!

They actually had two rooms going, with some of the best players I've seen at a session - anywhere! They draw a bunch of good local songwriters, and pickers - there seems to be a few styles, but all acoustic. The session was already cooking when I got there at 8PM, and they were going strong when I left at 12:30!

If any of y'all live within driving distance of Dallas, ya need to catch this Thursday night jam, at least once!

Downtown Denton. Coming from Dallas, exit at Dallas Dr. (Highway 77) and follow it North to the Square. 77 turns into Locust Street and the Square is formed by the intersection of Locust/Hickory/Oak/Elm streets. Hope to see you there soon. If you have trouble, just ask anyone where the old courthouse is.

Saturday mornings (from 10 until it gets too hot) there's and acoustic jam in Denton (30 minutes north of Dallas) on the south lawn of the courthouse square. Usually anywhere from 6 to 20 or so musicians show up. The type of music depends on who shows up - usually country, bluegrass, oldtime, and gospel. Less singer/songwriter and origial, but everyone's welcome and usually there are enough folks there to break up into smaller groups interested in particular types of music.

Thanks for the referal, Alice. I will look her up. And by the way, I went to the Celtic Quill session last night, and it was one of the best I ever been part of! There are some really great players and writers in the Dallas area. I believe I'm going to like it here!

Dallas Acoustic Music Network

Those of us living in North Texas are blessed with one of the nation's richest music resources; namely a wide variety of talented live acoustic music performers. On any day of the week you can see some of the best American singer/songwriters, folk and bluegrass flavored bands, or Traditional and Celtic performers - and many of these great performances without paying a cover charge!

The Dallas Acoustic Music Network has been formed to help music lovers and performers alike, keep in touch with those opportunities for playing, and hearing Damn good music! We are the marketing arm of the Texas Music Connection and Studio West - and are currently working on a recording project for the Sons of Hermann Hall songwriters (due for release in Spring of 2000). But our first love and major focus is the promotion of Dallas's best, live Acoustic Music performances.

Music Lovers: All of the music venues listed below offer admittance without cover charge for the 'jam session' or 'open mic' nights. THE BEST ACOUSTIC JAM SESSIONS IN DALLAS:

Wednesday night at the Celtic Quill there is an open Jam Session from 7:30 PM until the music runs out (or closing time). The theme generally returns to Celtic folk, but there's lots of originals, traditional and contemporary acoustic stuff as well. The players run the gambit; from enthusiastic new comers to seasoned pros. The Quill is one block off or Dallas Alley at 1914 Laws. 214 720 1373 (ask for Judy).

Thursday night (about 8 PM 'til closing) at the Sons of Hermann Hall (SOH) is an open jam. This popular event has a long running tradition of a freewheeling 'campfire-style' round robbin. Some of the best Dallas Acoustic Music players show up regularly. The styles are broad based from Texas folk and blues to traditional folk and blue grass. The players run the breadth of musical experience, but all have a genuine love for acoustic music. There's only one rule, "the only thing electric is the campfire!" Sunday afternoon at the Shady Side Cafe beginning at 3 PM is an open folk jam. This is generally a small session where the musicianship is good to excellent, though a beginners are genuinely welcomed. The musical style is traditional and Texas folk, with a number of good originals mixed in. Call the Shadyside at 214 321 6979 or just show up on Sunday and speak to Charley!

I am new to Mudcat, so please forgive me if I repeat already answered (or otherwise stupid) questions.

Who can tell me about the best folk sessions in the North Texas area? I received an Email form the Dallas Acoustic Music Network and they listed three clubs, and I made it to two of the sessions last week (both were excellent, and both were quite busy). Are there any other good sessions I should know about? And should I post the Dallas Acoustic Music Network news for others to see, or does everyone already get this news?
