Of course I knew this was the weekend for the marathon. I didn't know that it was being live-streamed. Anyone can sign up to read in advance of the event. People who don't sign up in advance can go anyway and sign up to be a substitute reader. Readers are assigned a time to read. When their time comes, before they go to the podium, they are told where to start and stop. Substitutes are needed to fill in for people who signed up but do not come--usually in the middle of the night. People can also observe but not read. People can come and go as they please. Parts are read in other languages by people who are fluent: then the same passages are read in English. There is a light dinner buffet and and breakfast buffet and snacks through the night, but people can also bring their own food or go to a local restaurant. There are several reasonably-priced eateries within easy walking distance. People can bring blankets or sleeping bags and sleep in parts of the museum. The first year I slept on my yoga mat. The second year I dozed in my chair. The Cetology chapter is read under whale skeletons. The chapter written as a play is presented as an onstage reading by young students. The parts that take place in the Seaman's Bethel are read there. The Bethel is across the street from the museum. For someone like me, it is fun--but not as much fun as singing chanteys. Participants who stay for the whole event are given a gift at the end. One year I was given a copy of Moby Dick. The following year I received a pop-up book of Moby Dick, autographed by one of Melville's descendants. I'm saving that for my grandson. I used to do a similar event at Mystic, but for the last few years it has conflicted with New Bedford's SummerFest. As much as I love Moby Dick, for me music always wins.

If I'd known about this sooner, I would have posted it sooner. It's a 24-hour reading at the New Bedford Whaling Museum and it will probably end today around noon. I did it for 2 consecutive years until it conflicted with Mystic's Chantey Blast. See/hear it at http://www.whalingmuseum.org/prog/marathon.html
