Thank you for your comments. I was just getting interested as a young teen when all of that started happening. I wish we had more people like him, still.

I kept thinking, today, that I'll bet Catspaw would have a few special words for this good man.

Sargent Shriver did a whole lot of good.

It certainly was not easy launching something like the Peace Corps and he was the one who was able to recruit, motivate and coordinate the team that made it happen, and it's still happening.

If it wasn't for the Peace Corps I wouldn't have spent three interesting years from 1965 to 1968 teaching in Ethiopia. You can take a wild guess what I might have been doing as an alternative.

I don't think of his death as being sad - death is an essential part of life - but as another chipping away at the tapestry of an era. I remember when the Peace Corps began, and all of those other successful social experiments, like the Job Corps and Head Start and the Special Olympics.

People will continue to denigrate the rich but a country would be poorer - no pun intended - without its civic-minded moneyed citizens.

Rest in peace, Sargent Shriver.

Sad to hear this: CLICK HERE.

From part of the transcript:

Sargent Shriver, a brother-in-law of President John Kennedy, founder of the Peace Corps and architect of President Lyndon Johnson's "War on Poverty," died yesterday in Bethesda, Md. He was 95.

The son of a banker, Shriver went to Yale Law School and earned a Purple Heart in World War II before marrying Eunice Kennedy in 1946. He had political ambitions, but put them aside to help his brother-in-law John F. Kennedy win the 1960 presidential election.
