One of my favorite authors. Very prolific novelist, essayist, poet, scholar.
He was probably best known for "A Long and Happy Life," for which he won the William Faulkner Award for notable first novel, and "Kate Vaiden", for which he won the National Book Critics Circle Award. I've read many, though not yet all of the novels he has written, and one of my long-term projects has been to gradually work my way through everything he has written. His books are not ones you want to rush through. Rather, they are to be lingered over, his characters contemplated and considered. I fairly recently finished "The Promise of Rest," the last book in the Great Circle, or Mayfield Trilogy.
I wish him well-deserved and peaceful rest.
