Lady Hillary and I have been using Avast [free] after uninstalling AVG. We found that it tended to slow the puder down too much at inconvenient times. We also have installed Glary registry cleaner suite [free] to clean out most of the things which were slowing two of our computers down.

VT -

But the auto industry is making progress.

Item 10 is pretty close to the way you turn off a couple of the hybrid/electrics now.

just got this by email today and seems this tread is good place to put it

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX),Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated,

'If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.'

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating:

If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash........Twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.

4. Occasionally, executing a manoeuvre such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads.

6 The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single 'This Car Has Performed An illegal Operation' warning light.

7. The airbag system would ask 'Are you sure?' before deploying.

8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

10. You'd have to press the 'Start' button to turn the engine off.

PS - I'd like to add that when all else fails, you could call 'customer service' in some foreign country and be instructed in some foreign language how to fix your car yourself!!!!

Actually, I slightly challenge the received wisdom that kids are more au fait with electronics than their parental old f*rts.

I don't think my son has ever removed the accumulated crap files off his laptop, run a defrag, a virus scan, a backup - zilch! He has fallen over the power cable so often that he's had to buy a new charger. The dust on the keyboard has to be seen to be believed. (That and the floor covered in sticky plates, Coors and Peroni bottles, 5p pieces, Mafia books, etc). Yeeurch. Oh yes, who allowed his girlfriend to leave a Canon Ixus in an open tent at the Monsters of Rock festival? At least he still has the charger and the box....

When my daughter was at Uni she cleverly knocked a mug off a top shelf onto her laptop, removing several function keys. She later spilled a glass full of orange juice all over the keyboard, and the hard drive subsequently failed. Guess which silly sod 200 miles away had to organise the pickup, repair and return?

Don't be blind, GUEST,Grishka - children are much more intuitive with this stuff, since most of them grew up with it. I managed our family "network" of computers up until the kids were in high school, insisting on cleanup and virus scans and what programs in place, but as they got older I insisted they not only know the software, but get under the hood. What was new and kind of scary to me the first time I did it was just kind of interesting to the kids when they started doing the work.

There are several things at Microsoft that would be good for your computer, Bobert. It looks like the site Dan recommends has it all in hand.

go to microsoft's onecare saftey scanner and do a full scan, it will remove all the crap. It will take awhile ok, also at the top you will see a message that activex needs installed. It is safe to do that.

I find microsoft's onecare scanner to be excellent. it is free

Bobert, sometimes when something like that starts up, it's a sign that you need to do some tidying.

Borrow the neighbor's 12-year-old kid and ask them to

Disk Cleanup
Disk Defragmentation
Scan for Viruses
Install the free WinPatrol program to keep track of your registry

You might backup the important stuff in there, and you might delete old or extra files if the hard drive is full.

Just a few thoughts. Oh, tip the kid.

The delay for the stuff to appear after you type it is just because your computer is too busy to be bothered with what you want it to do.

It's probably running one of those "background processes" that's intended to keep all your computer's innards neat and pretty.

If it's busy doing something else, you'll often see the "HD Activity Light" (often near your power switch) lit up or blinking, which is a clue even if it doesn't tell you what it's doing.

A reboot will often clear things, until the computer has time to decide again: "I can do something more worthwhile than what this dummy wants me to do."

Or the delay could be because that's how long it takes the keystroke logger that some malware put on your computer to send a copy of what you typed to Nigeria. It makes you wait to be sure that you don't type something more before it records all your personal data, so don't mention how long you've been wearing the same pair of skivvys - if you'd be embarrassed having Nigerians know.

Yes, do a diskcheck (/dskchk), then defrag it, check for registry errors, get rid of the temp files, Only keep often used or essential icons on the desktop. Don't spend money unless you have to. Pick up Spybot (free) and AVG anti-virus, free also. You pick up key loggers and all kinds of crap where ever you go these days on the net and those two programs do a pretty good job protecting your machine.

There is a significant difference between THIS computer, which is 8 years old with 1½ gigs memory and my new one downstairs (on the network) which has 2 gigs memory and a LOT less in startup. I can tell just playing online solitaire games.

(Grishka... I try to learn ALL the little tricks (and add some in special programs)...but there are 3 ways to do almost everything now, and sometimes, the more you know, the harder it is to make a decision.. ;>). Many shortcuts are available to those who care to learn keyboard combinations, but some want to use the mouse for everything.)

Glad it's fixed, Bob, but I'd like to echo Grishka's comment that such problems can be due to bad programming. I installed Opera on an older Mac my daughter passed on to me a few months back. It did exactly what Bob was talking about - type something and it took a few seconds to appear onscreen. The same release of Opera had worked fine on my old PC (before it gave up the ghost) and Safari and Firefox both worked fine on the Mac, so it was definitely a case of Opera's programmers not adequately testing their product on all platforms. A subsequent Opera update fixed the problem... just before that Mac also went to the computer graveyard.

Bill D, you probably guessed that I failed to refresh to read your answer before posting mine, otherwise I would not have needed to. Glad to see you learned something yourself though ;-).

Bobert, please tell us whether you actually can type ahead and all letters eventually arrive, and what you see in the task manager (leave it open!) while the response is slow. Does the effect occur in all programs or only in a particular one? In the latter case the program (which one is it?) may just be badly programmed, e.g. permanently "swapping" between working memory and the harddisk. You may consider buying more memory or using another text program.

Do a "disk clean" (not defrag). That will empty the "wastebasket", get rid of temporary files, etc. There could be a lot of crap in there slowing up the system.

Could it also be that a CCleaner needs to be done? I have a CCleaner

it works fine.

It could just be doing 'other' things in the background...like updating or performing some scheduled, automatic task which uses memory.

(I can often see what is using memory by doing ctrl-alt-delete and looking at the list of stuff under 'processes'... most of the numbers will be 0, but a couple might be going from 5 to 95%, showing that something is happening.)
