It's good to know you've become proficient in speaking cat, leeneia. LOL

My cat is afraid of the microwave oven, which is quite loud.

She utters a distinctive "Mra!" which means "Move the cat's dish to the stairs, because the cat can't eat in the kitchen when the cyclotron is in operation."

It took us a while to figure this out, but now it's quite clear to us.

You may be right, Becca, that this cat does have a really loud purr, but I don't think what we're hearing in that short video clip is really a purr. Purring generally is a more continuous sound & vibration, not just a rather short burst of it.

PBS has aired a special on cats a number of times, and I think that's where I heard about the findings of research on cat sounds analysis that showed that they "say" a lot more than just "meow." They have quite a few different utterances, which seem to have different "meanings," and some of them sound very much like what this kitty is "saying" in the video clip linked to above -- only not a loud.

I once had a cat whom I named "Murphy Prang," because he could, and often did, basically "say" his own name. Much like Smokey in the aforementioned video, he would say, "Mmrrrrphhhhh!" or "Prrrrrrrannnnggg" (or even "Mrrrrrphhhhh-prrrrrannnnnggg"). He could, of course, purr too, but that was "cat talk," not purring.

If this cat truly has a very loud purr, I would love to hear a recording of it where the "purr" goes on for more than 3 or 4 seconds.

My first cat, a longhaired male, purred so loud you could hear him in the next room. But we never measured it. I begin to wish we had.

The story I watched gave a much better sample of the noise. It's definitely a purr. I have had many cats who purred while rubbing their faces or eating or whatever so it's not exclusively done with the mouth closed.

Why has the poor thing got TWO collars on? I've had cats all my life and even showed some with the Cat Fancy, and I won't use collars at all. I also wonder if it's actually got a breathing problem; if one of my cats sounded like that, I'd wheel him off to the Vet for a check-up!

I agree with Genie. The cat's not purring, she's just uttering a particularly raspy meow.

Purring comes from the chest somewhere, and the cat's mouth is closed while purring.

Have you ever laid your ear against the side of a purring cat? There are all sorts of minor throbs and rushing sounds going on inside the cat. We don't hear them otherwise.

I saw this on a "news" program a couple of days ago. What made me really sad is that Smokey is in her 8th home because she's so loud (and apparently rarely stops making noise). Maybe Jacqui could sneak her back to the States...

I have two who are Siamese/tuxedo mix and they make all kinds of noise though it's talking, not purring.

OK, that's impressive.

However - although I can't claim to "speak cat" fluently, I don't think that is really a purr. It sounded more like one of those other "cat words" that B Kliban wrote about (besides just "meow" and "mew"). Actually, it sounded like a variation on your basic "meow" -- i.e., a "meow" with distinctive feeling and accent.

We have three Siamese cats, and believe me, they aren't quiet! They howl, scream, yowl and hoot. One even says what sounds like "Laptop!" when he wants to go out.

Ah well I saw that cat on Letterman, and as much I adore the company of all cats,

of any stripes or spots, ladies and gents, breeds or mutts......

don't we catlovers love animals of the feline persuasiion exactly because they are graceful, lithe, intuitive, charming and

(wish I could find the key for bold, and say, 50 point font)

QUIET??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jest a thought

Only 73 decibels? Our cats exceed that in their sleep.
