Cartoons in the 30s through the 50s were great because television was non-existent or in its infancy at that time. Cartoons were made for movie houses and drive-ins (remember those?). They had to be well rendered to entertain people of all ages not just children. Cartoon quality dipped starting in the 60s because cartoons began being shown on TV as kiddie entertainment and kids don't care about the animation quality as the popularity of Ninja Turtles and Scooby-Doo attest. Why spend money making animation extravaganzas when the cheapest, crappiest shit will do as well with that particular demographic?

So everybody who says of these old cartoons, they don't make them this way any more, you couldn't be more right. The Fleischer Bros. studios could never outdo Disney though they tried but I enjoyed their cartoons every bit as much and thought they were further ahead in certain areas. I think the Fleischers invented rotoscoping which is where they film someone dancing and them draw a cartoon figure over the top on cels. When the cels are strung together, the cartoon figure appears to be dancing with amazing realness.

Another thing the Fleischers did was set up elaborate stage sets both in front of and behind the cels on top of a revolving table. The result is an amazing 3D effect as you will see here:

Warner Bros. cartoons were generally on the more subversive and madcap side than Walt Disney cartoons. Also, as in Carrotblanca, they were not above lampooning their human stars in the (7 minute) shorts.

Not only was the animation far better than today but the old toons are just better without the PC crap. Imagine the Bugs toon with Martin and McCoy being made today? Wouldn't happen. Too violent and certainly too PI.

And at Netflix. The Cartoon Network also shows old Looney Tunes every afternoon. My grandson and I watch them sometimes. He's going to lvoe this one.

Most hand created animation of the '30s - mid '50s has more charm than any of the recent computer generated animation I've seen. There are many, many old cartoons available at YouTube from Koko the Clown to Betty Boop to Popeye, Superman, Bugs Bunny etc and etc.

Notice how good the music is in these old ones, too. Real orchestra, etc. Very rich, vibrant and so much more enjoyable than most of the crap put out for kids, today. Thanks, LH!

Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Donald Duck on moving day...

Some great laughs here. Those were the days when cartoons were marvelously fluid and imaginative, full of vibrant color and detail, and riotously funny slapstick action. Goofy has an epic struggle with a stubborn and mischievous piano that doesn't want to leave home. Donald has an even more epic struggle with various household objects he gets "attached to", including a deadly bathroom plunger! Damn funny! Black Pete, playing the usual heavy role, ends up in hot water, and Donald closes out the show with a spectacular temper tantrum.
