As I understand it, the Gestapo had difficulty believing that this petite woman could actually be the 'White Mouse'.

Found this curious: "Wake had been arrested in Toulouse, but was released four days later" - no explanation given, while two sentences previously, we're told that the Gestapo had put a five million franc price on her head. ... ?

I read her autobiography over 50 years ago, and was greatly impressed by her courage and lack of pomposity. I only found out now that I'd spent a significant portion of my life commuting past the placr where she was living.

Now, I've two more books to find and read.

I didn't know about her when I was a child, but in my playtime one of the main characters I acted out was behind the enemy lines in France helping the Resistance. Of course, I only imagined what might happen; had no idea of the real horrors, but I did have a sense of the heroism it took for such people as Nancy Wake to do what they did. Thanks for this very interesting thread.

Obviously a very brave woman. I read her obituary in the Guardian and was very impressed - as anyone would be.

Robyn, every time Nancy made the news here she was always said to have been born in New Zealand - she may have lived much of her life here in Oz, but we know she was a Kiwi by birth.

It's sad that the word "hero" has been devalued by inappropriate overuse. Nancy was a true heroine in the very real sense. Her autobiographies are compelling reading. May her deeds never be forgotten.

She was considered to be an Australian but she was born in Wellington, New Zealand - just like me!

Heard the news this morning on the car radio - what a life. Her book "The White Mouse" has been on the school syllabus here in New South Wales. It was a crying shame that for so long her wartime bravery was ignored by the Australian government, although she had been decorated by the French and British governments.
