The piece of his writing that Always makes me laugh is his paraphrase of the Danny Kaye routine of "the vessle with the Pestle" that he rendered as " The Gateaux from the Chateau "

RIP
Tuesday night is British comedy night on the local PBS station. "Are You Being Served" is a favorite.
"Are you free, Mr. Granger?" Pause...look around to the left, look around to the right. "Yes. I'm free."
Still makes me laugh.

Loved his work indeed.

My school's play in 1950 was The Ghost Train, written in 1923 by Arnold Ridley, who later played the aged Private Godfrey in Dad's Army. Our lead actor was Frank Williams, who went on many years later to play alongside Mr Ridley as the Vicar of Walmington-On-Sea. Just a bit of small-worldery reminiscence induced by this obit & tribute thread.

I played a handsome young newly-wed, btw ~ cast against type?

Well he kept me laughing through my childhood and teenage years and since too. Nothing surpassed Dad's Army though, the "Don't tell him Pike!" episode must rank as one of the best comedy episode ever. Long may his programmes be a memorial to him.

Died today, David Croft, writer of great character comedy(often with Jimmy Perry).....It ain't half hot mum"....."Dads Army"...Are you being served?" etc, etc.
Wonderful stuff in its time, now superceded by Craig Cash with "Early Doors" and "The Royle Family"
